If your beloved pet does any of these cute gestures, then the feeling is definitely mutual.

For most people, their cat or dog is firmly a part of the family, and they will go above and beyond to make sure that their beloved furry friend has everything they need to lead the most comfortable life possible.

However, if you have ever wondered if your pet is as dedicated to you as you are to them, the answer has finally been revealed by an expert, who explains the signs you should be looking out for that indicate the level of affection your pet has for you.

Experts from Animal Friends Pet Insurance - Layla Beakhouse and Catrin George - claimed that even if your cat or dog can't tell you with words that they love you, if they display these behaviours it is likely to indicate their deep affection for you, the Daily Star reports.

When it comes to cats, who are often known to be aloof and independent creatures who don't need tonnes from their owners, you should be looking out for subtle signs like the slow blink. Generally, the experts claim, if a cat is staring unblinkingly at someone it can mean they are a little weary and are trying to sound them out. However, if you notice your cat blinks slowly while looking at you, it's their equivalent of smiling and means they're happy to be in your company.

Equally, if your cat kneads you with its paws, this means it loves you, as does the gentle headbutts it may give you from time to time. "When a cat rubs their head against you, this is known as 'bunting' and is used by our kitties to claim familial relationships.

"Kneading is a sign your pet feels safe and secure with you. Cats have scent glands all over their body - including on their face - so both head-butting and kneading are also used to share their scent, a strong signal of acceptance which marks you as one of their own," explains Beakhouse.

If your cat occasionally gives you a lick, you should also take this to mean that you have made it into their affections, as cats lick each other to groom one another, if your cat does this it means it might be trying to take care of you in a similar way.

Dogs are often known to be unswervingly loyal to their owners, and so behaviours like them leaning their body weight on you, or shadowing you around the house mean that they love being around you. Equally, if they show you their belly, it means their trust for you is implicit and when "they display their most vulnerable side, your dog shows you their tum because they want to communicate how vastly they love you and appreciate your affection".

There are also a couple of behaviours that both dogs and cats share that demonstrate their love for you - the first is a "tell-tale" sign they feel safe and secure around you: sleeping in your company or on you. This is because in the wild, for both cats and dogs, sleeping is when they are "most vulnerable" and so for them to be comfortable having a snooze on or next to you means that they definitely love you and think you're all part of the same pack.

The second shared behaviour for both dogs and cats is bringing you gifts. Now, for cats, this is most likely going to be in the form of the spoils of their latest hunt and while you might not appreciate the dead bird in your kitchen, remember it's their way of trying to teach you how it's done and make sure you have something to eat - meaning that they one hundred percent see you as their family.

When it comes to dogs they are more likely to bring you a slightly less messy gift in the form of their favourite ball or toy, and this attempt to share is also a sign of their affection.
