Liam Neeson to star in Naked Gun 2025 reboot in place of Leslie Nieslen
Liam Neeson is set to star in a reboot of the iconic Naked gun movies in place of the late Leslie Nielsen.
The iconic movie franchise is getting a long-awaited remake by Paramount Pictures and the 71-year-old Irish actor has been cast as legendary character Lt. Frank Drebin. The role of the bumbling police detective was of course originally made famous by Leslie in the '80s and '90s with the films proving a huge hit with cinema-goers.
The film is set to begin production soon, with a cinematic release scheduled for July 2025. The script will be provided by Dan Gregor, Doug Man and Schaffer, who all also collaborated for 2022’s animated release Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers. Meanwhile, Akiva Schaffer will take the reins for directing the hotly anticipated creation.

Hogan/Getty Images)The original Naked Gun movies were all derived from the Police Squad TV series and a hallmark of the slapstick-style comedy that was popular at the time of their release. The collection spanned over six years and featured three instalments - The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad in 1988, 1991's The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear, and Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult in 1994.

Popular movie star Leslie died in 2010 at the age of 84. Prior to embracing the comedy role, he had been better known as a dramatic actor. He previously said of the role: “It’s been dawning on me slowly that for the past 35 years I have been cast against type, and I’m finally getting to do what I really wanted to do.”
Movie fans will be more familiar with Liam Neeson's work as an action movie star than comedy, with the move a step away from his predicted casting type. The star is known for his work in the Taken movie series, as well as other big name action flicks including The Grey, Cold Pursuit, Gangs Of New York, Clash Of The Titans and of course Star Wars.

Fans are used to seeing Liam in more serious action roles (Getty Images for ZFF)However, he has previously shown a more light-hearted side to his acting repertoire when he starred in romcom Love Actually, Ted 2, and Men In Black International. Liam is yet to comment on the casting but filmgoers will be excited to see a cinematic hero stepping into Leslie's shoes ahead of the big-screen release next year.
The rest of the cast is yet to be announced but we can expect more huge Hollywood names to attach to the project. The original also starred Priscilla Presley as Frank's long suffering wife.
