British Gas extends scheme that offers half price electricity every Sunday

British Gas is once again extending a scheme that gives households half price electricity on Sundays.

The PeakSave Sundays initiative will was due to end today (February 29) but will now run every Sunday, between 11am to 4pm, until March 31. British Gas customers must have a smart meter installed to take part in the scheme. During the event, your electricity usage will be recorded and then British Gas will credit back half of what you spent back.

The money saved will appear as "PeakSave Credit" on your energy bill and you will be sent a summary each month. British Gas households can sign up to the scheme here. It comes after the grant help offered through the British Gas Individuals and Families Fund, which is a scheme run by the British Gas Energy Trust, was increased from £1,500 to £2,000 last month.

The support is designed to help people clear their energy debt - and you don't need to be British Gas customers to be eligible for the scheme. To access the help, you need to have energy debt of up to £2,000 and you must have previously received help from a money advice agency in the past three months.

The grants will go to people who are looking to clear an outstanding debt on their current energy account, but cannot get help from their own energy supplier. Suppliers that run their own support fund include: Boost, Eon, Eon Next, EDF, Scottish Power, Ovo, Octopus, SSE and Utilita.

You won't be eligible if you have already received a grant from the British Gas Energy Trust within the last two years. If you're a British Gas customer, your balance will be verified with British Gas as part of the application process.Energy bills across England, Wales and Scotland are set to fall this spring after Ofgem confirmed its new price cap.

The price cap will drop by around 12% from this April. It means the typical dual fuel household paying by direct debit can expect their annual bill to fall from £1,928 a year to £1,690, a saving of £238. The new price cap will come into effect on April 1 and will last until June 30, when it will be revised again. It is the lowest price cap level since February 2022.
