Millions of families would save hundreds of pounds on their energy bills under Labour’s plan to insulate homes, Rachel Reeves has said.

The Shadow Chancellor accused the Conservatives of failing to help households keep warm.

Figures show that more than half of homes in England have an energy performance certificate (EPC) rating of below “C”, which means they are less efficient than they should be. This means over 13 million families across the country are facing higher bills and colder homes.

The constituencies with the lowest proportion of energy efficient homes are Dwyfor Meirionnydd and Rhondda in Wales and Hodge Hill and Perry Barr in Birmingham. Birmingham Hall Green, Pendle in Lancashire and Bradford West in West Yorkshire also only had about a quarter of homes at the EPC C standard or above.

Ms Reeves has pledged that a future Labour government would insulate five million homes over five years, helping to cut household bills by an average of £445-a-year on current energy prices.

Speaking ahead of a visit in the East of England today, Ms Reeves accused the Conservatives of “failing to tackle the cost of living crisis, with entire cities and towns being left behind”.

She added: “The cost of living crisis is still very real for households across Britain. However, Rishi Sunak and the Tories are simply putting this issue into the too hard basket, leaving people paying higher bills and living in poorly insulated homes.

“As Chancellor, I want to tackle the big problems head on and make long-term decisions that make working people better off. Those would be my priorities in a Labour Budget. “Labour has a real plan to keep more money in working people’s pockets while creating a stable pipeline of good, skilled work for tradespeople all across the country.”

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt will deliver the Budget next Wednesday, when he will set out the Government’s tax and spending plans for the months ahead. It could be his last opportunity to make major changes ahead of the General Election.
