Leeds United scored an early opener against Chelsea in their FA Cup fifth round meeting, but ITV's cameras missed the goal.

Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea went into the game in desperate need of a response after losing the Carabao Cup final to Liverpool on Sunday. They got anything but, though, with defender Axel Disasi gifting the ball to the visitors to allow Mateo Joseph to open the scoring

Fans watching at home on ITV4 were left fuming, voicing their concerns on social media. It brought to mind another ITV hiccup more than a decade ago, when the broadcaster had cut to ads and missed a Dan Gosling winner in the Merseyside Derby.

This time, a replay of a Dan James chance was still being shown as Chelsea looked to restart play with a goal kick. By the time live pictures returned, though, the ball was in the Chelsea net after Axel Disasi was caught in possession and Jaidon Anthony fed Joseph to slot home.

"Who made a bigger mistake for that goal: Disassi or the ITV director who didn't cut to the live action until a split second before the goal was scored?" one fan asked.

"Yeah don’t worry about it ITV just miss the goal, not like it matters," another sarcastic viewer added. "Yet another missed goal to add to the list," was the verdict from another.

"Leeds ahead at Stamford Bridge. Massive goal for the Yorkshire…..massive fail ITV for pretty much missing the goal whilst showing a replay!" another fan wrote.

Chelsea needed to battle back after gifting their opponents the lead, but it didn't take them too long. Nicolas Jackson levelled things up in the 15th minute, collecting a tidy pass from Moises Caicedo before drilling the ball home.

The winner of Chelsea's game against Leeds knew before kick-off that Championship leaders Leicester City would await them in the quarter-finals. Enzo Maresca's Foxes beat Premier League Bournemouth on Tuesday night, with Abdul Fatawu scoring an extra-time winner.

Leeds and Leicester met in the league just last week, with Daniel Farke's team coming from behind to claim a 3-1 victory. Connor Roberts, Archie Gray and Patrick Bamford were all on target after Wout Faes had given Leicester a half-time lead.

Chelsea, meanwhile, lost to Leicester in the 2021 final when the Foxes were still a Premier League team. On that occasion, Youri Tielemans - now at Aston Villa - scored the only goal of the game just after the hour mark.
