News of the death of Thomas Kingston - husband of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent’s daughter - has rocked the Royal Family tonight.

The 45-year-old man was discovered dead at an address in Gloucestershire on Sunday evening. His family have paid tribute to the financier today, saying he "was an exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him".

A statement on behalf of Lady Gabriella Kingston, Mr Martin and Mrs Jill Kingston, Mrs Joanna Connolly and Mrs Emma Murray said: “It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the death of Thomas Kingston, our beloved husband, son and brother.

“Tom was an exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him. His death has come as a great shock to the whole family and we ask you to respect our privacy as we mourn his passing.” Mr Kingston married Lady Gabriella Kingston on May 18, 2019, at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. They got engaged the previous year on the Isle of Sark, part of the Channel Islands.

Mr Kingston, born on June 22, 1978, leaves behind lawyer dad William Martin Kingston KC, mum Jill Mary Kingston, and his two sisters. While she does not carry out royal duties, Lady Gabriella, 42, is currently a freelance writer and contributes to multiple publications, including The London Magazine and Conde Nast Traveller.

In June 2019, Mr Kingston made his first-ever appearance at Trooping the Colour, an annual parade held in honour of Queen Elizabeth's birthday.

Mr Kingston, a graduate of the University of Bristol, was also a director of Devonport Capital, which specialises in providing finance for companies in “frontier economies”. He had also worked in Baghdad, Iraq, working to procure the release of hostages after joining the Diplomatic Missions Unit of the Foreign Office.

The financier was a close friend of Pippa Middleton – the Princess of Wales’s sister – and the pair were said to have dated in 2011. Although Lady Gabriella is not a working member of the royal family, she and Mr Kingston’s family are being supported by the Royal Household through this difficult time.

Mr Kingston is close friends with Prince William, though Kensington Palace says the Prince of Wales, 41, did not pull out of the King Constantine Memorial Service at Windsor Castle due to the tragic passing of Mr Kingston. No funeral plans have been released so far. Lady Gabriella’s parents Prince and Princess Michael of Kent attended the service for the late King Constantine II of Greece on Tuesday in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Constantine was Lady Gabriella’s godfather.
