More Brits would rather share a kebab with Keir Starmer than Rishi Sunak, a new poll has found.
The survey, conducted ahead of this week’s British Kebab Awards, looked at British politics through the lens of the doner - and found the Labour leader was a preferred dining partner to the Prime Minister by 13% to 11%. Ahead of both party leaders were disgraced ex-PM Boris Johnson, who led the poll on 25% and Nigel Farage on 18%.
Conservative voters are still enamoured with Mr Johnson, with 40% choosing him to share a kebab with, ahead of Mr Farage and Mr Sunak on 22% each. But Labour voters were much more open to crossing the political divide for their dining partners, with their top 4 choices being Mr Starmer (29%), Mr Johnson (19%), deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner (17%) and Farage (12%).
Tories are much less likely to want to share a kebab with left-leaning politicians – their top 3 are Mr Johnson (40%), Mr Farage (22%) and Mr Sunak (22%), with Ms Rayner in 4th on just 4%. Ibrahim Dogus, Founder of the British Kebab Awards, commented: “As we gear up for the 12th edition of the British Kebab Awards, it’s great to see that people across the nation and of all political leanings can agree that a kebab is something to be enjoyed.”
The poll also found the humble doner was the nation’s favourite kebab, with nearly 50% of those polled choosing a pitta of shaved minced lamb over chargrilled chunks of meat. But the nation is less picky when it comes to sauces, with a near even split between garlic (25%), chili (20%) and chili and garlic (22%) – although 16% prefer no sauce at all.
