BBC bosses are doing anything to secure the rights to the Gavin and Stacey reunion episode.

It comes amid reports that writers Ruth Jones and James Corden have reunited to plan a one-off episode, following the success of the 2019 Christmas special, nine years after the sitcom ended. Viewers of the programme will know that Nessa (Jones) proposed to Smithy (Corden) as the show concluded, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats.

When the show aired in 2019, an eye-watering 11.6 million people tuned into BBC One to watch it broadcast live across the nation. When the official viewing figures were released, it emerged that over 18 million viewers had watched the programme, making it the most-watched comedy in over a decade.

But while creator Ruth had previously stated that there were no plans to create another episode, reports claim that BBC bosses aren't waiting around. "The Beeb wants this to be their gift to the nation on Christmas Day," a source told The Sun. They added: "But because they're funded by licence fee payers, they know they can't compete with an international streaming giant when it comes to offering a huge six-figure deal.

"They're hoping offering the prime festive spot and the promise of another huge audience will be enough." But while streaming giants like Netflix have money, the source claims that the service doesn't have viewers in every room across the nation, unlike the Beebs. But earlier this month, Ruth broke her silence on the alleged plans.

She addressed the situation whilst appearing on RTE Radio 1, saying: "Apparently there's a bidding war between the BBC and Netflix." Ruth added: "Where does this stuff come from?" She went on to discuss having met up with James when he returned to the UK after having lived in the US.

"We went for lunch in London a few months ago and we got papped. And then the next thing is 'Oh my god they must be writing more Gavin & Stacey,' which is lovely. It's lovely that people love it and they're so desperate for it," she shared. The Welsh native went on to address the support from fans, saying: "Imagine if it was the opposite and they were like 'Oh god, they're not bringing that back'." She however continued: "It's sadly a rumour. I don't know what to say."

She commented: "All I can say is - if there was something to say on that front, James and I would happily announce it. You know, we would." Ruth added that she is "lost for words" over the speculation and added: "It's hilarious." She further commented in the interview: "I dunno. I just have to smile."

The Mirror approached the BBC and Ruth Jones for comment.
