Washing away the winter dirt and grime is easy with a pressure washer - but there
Washing away the winter dirt and grime is easy with a pressure washer - but there's a dizzying array on the market

It has been a hard winter. Incessant rain and a barrage of storms has left its muddy mark on our gardens, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that's got a green tinge of algae on the roof of my car and across my patio slabs.

But spring is in the air and it's a time for cleaning up all this mess, getting our outside spaces ready to enjoy in the warmer sunshine, and treating our cars to a thorough clean-up in the hope of drier spells to come.

You're going to want a pressure washer, trust me. I've just used mine to blast a layer of moss off my driveway and it's one of the most satisfying garden jobs you can do. I'm looking forward to blasting the green grime off my patio at long last, and the green hue on the roof of my white car will soon be a thing of the past too.

Pressure washers make the job really easy by firing an intense jet of water at your surfaces, peeling off the dirt as it goes, and they needn't be expensive. There are some good deals out there.

I've been searching online for the best pressure washers I could find online, using Amazon as a base for my search, and comparing the features and performance you get from each appliance against the prices.

Here's my list of the 10 pressure washers you might want to look at as you plan your outdoor projects this spring season.

What to look for when buying a new pressure washer

One of the most important factors in your choice of pressure washers is going to be how much pressure it can put out. Most quality brands will give you an indication of this in either PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) or Bar.

When you're comparing models, you might find you need to convert these, and there are plenty of websites that will do this equation for you. A good rule of thumb is to try and get at least 1,500PSI to clean grime off patios, but for cleaning cars 500-1,000PSI will do a good job, and you could get away with a couple of hundred PSI for just washing the soap suds away.

Petrol pressure washers might deliver 4,000PSI or more, but anything past 2,000 is very powerful - perhaps even enough to shatter a pane of glass at close range, so always be careful.

The next thing to look at is accessories. Most pressure washers will come bundled with a selection of tools designed for specific jobs. Some will come with different nozzles, some might have detergent dispensers or snow-foam lances for car washing.

You might also get the option of brush attachments for patios or car wheels. These can be handy, but they can be purchased separately for reasonable prices. Keep in mind what you want to use your pressure washer for.

Another consideration might be whether you want a corded or cordless pressure washer. Mains-powered pressure washers are still by far the most powerful option, but there are some really good cordless devices out there.

The beauty of cordless pressure washers isn't just in the convenience and the lack of cables, but they also won't necessarily need a tap nearby. They can pipe their water supply from a bucket.

You'll struggle to find any that are powerful enough to clean a patio, though, and even the most expensive options will be outclassed by a mains pressure washer when it comes to washing deep grime off car paintwork.

That said, they can be handy for applying and washing away snow foam and other detergents, and many will come with the appropriate accessories. Just keep an eye on battery life, because some won't last very long.

Five best mains-powered pressure washers on Amazon right now

1. Bosch EasyAquatak Pressure Washer - £59

We list the 10 best pressure washers to blast away the winter grime this spring

This is one of the cheapest branded devices out there and it's going to be great for most light duties, such as washing algae off garden furniture, blasting away leaves, or washing cars and bikes.

Don't expect 100 Bar (1,600PSI) to do an amazing job on patio slabs, but it should get the worst of it off, especially if you use it regularly.

Amazon is currently discounting this one down from £89.99, so it's actually cheaper than the 100 Bar version. The horizontal shape will be easy to move around, but some people might prefer to have wheels.

On the whole though, it's a great compact pressure washer at a really tempting price.

2. Kärcher K2 Compact - £89.98

We list the 10 best pressure washers to blast away the winter grime this spring

The first Karcher in the line-up is the new K2 Compact, which is on offer at the moment with 31% off its usual price.

You won't get any accessories at this price, but they're easy to come by, and it's upright structure will suit most people, because it's very compact and easy to carry around.

It has 110 Bar (about 1,600PSI) which is good enough for most jobs, and Karcher's build quality is legendary. This one would last you for years.

3. Yard Force 2000W Pressure Washer - £114.99

We list the 10 best pressure washers to blast away the winter grime this spring

Ramping up the power now, to 150 Bar, which is just over 2,000PSI, this Yard Force might be more expensive, but it has the grunt to tackle all sorts of jobs. There's a 32% discount at the moment, too, which is good.

It comes with a soap bottle and foam sprayer for cleaning cars and bikes, and the hose reel is handy, keeping things compact in an otherwise chunky, wheeled frame.

This is a great option if you need to blast algae off your paving slabs, because it has more than enough power.

4. Turtle Wax TW135 Multi-Purpose High-Pressure Washer - £120

We list the 10 best pressure washers to blast away the winter grime this spring

Turtle Wax knows a thing or two about cleaning cars, so this 135-Bar pressure washer looks well worth considering.

I love the fact its accessories are contained behind a neat "door", which will make it more compact for storage, and it's the brand's most powerful model, with nearly 2,000PSI, so it's ready for most outdoor jobs.

There are no special offers on this pressure washer, but it's a pretty good price already considering the spec.

5. Wilks-USA RX520 Electric Pressure Washer - £135.99

We list the 10 best pressure washers to blast away the winter grime this spring

This one was well worth including not just because of the current 20% discount, but also because of its amazing range of accessories.

It has 140 Bar of pressure, which is over 2,000PSI, so it'll be man enough for all kinds of jobs, but the fact it comes with everything from a snow foam lance to a patio brush and even a car-wheel brush really adds a lot of value.

I also like the addition of a kink-free hose reel on the top, which suggests it'll make one of the worst jobs in jetwashing quite easy.

This looks like a great all-rounder, and customers seem to agree, with some very strong reviews.

Five best cordless pressure washers

1. DayPlus Cordless Power Washer - £23.94

We list the 10 best pressure washers to blast away the winter grime this spring

We'll start with the cheapest cordless pressure washer I could find on Amazon, because it may be an interesting option if you're on a strict budget.

And, just because it's cheap, doesn't necessarily mean you don't get much for your money. It comes with a battery and charger, but also some accessories for applying foam and even a handy storage bag.

It lists its pressure capability in Megapascals, but 1.2Mpa is roughly 175PSI, so it's not exactly a monster, but it'll work fine at getting soap off cars, or perhaps cleaning muddy boots.

2. Fai Top Cordless High Pressure Washer Gun - £25.99

We list the 10 best pressure washers to blast away the winter grime this spring

Another cheap cordless pressure washer with another big bundle of accessories thrown in. Reviews on this one are mixed, but plenty of people were impressed.

There's no mention of its power output, which is a bit disconcerting, but reviewers have said it's man enough for most jobs, and its 21V battery should last long enough to clean a car or two.

Don't expect miracles from this one, but it's certainly good value for money.

3. Mulcort Cordless Pressure Washer - £47.99

We list the 10 best pressure washers to blast away the winter grime this spring

This device looks fairly powerful, and I love the fact it comes with a neat, hard plastic case, and two 24v batteries. Very handy.

It claims to have 150PSI, which isn't anything special, but it'll be fine for most jobs.

It doesn't look like many people have reviewed it yet, either, but some metal parts and those two big batteries suggest it should be good value given the price.

4. CQWLKEJ Cordless Pressure Washer - £80.91

We list the 10 best pressure washers to blast away the winter grime this spring

A 10% coupon bringing down the price of this already-discounted pressure washer makes it well worth a look.

Lots of accessories, a hard case, and the remarkable claim of 652PSI from its brushless motor suggests it'll be a strong performer, and it even comes with two 21V batteries.

Plastic parts aren't great to see at this price, but reviewers seem pretty pleased with their purchase, so it's possibly a pretty smart buy while the deal is on.

5. Worx WG620E.4 Hydroshot Cordless Portable Pressure Washer - £180

We list the 10 best pressure washers to blast away the winter grime this spring

Yes, this is expensive, but it's a good price for a quality branded cordless pressure washer with such a big array of accessories.

Its 320PSI is good for a cordless, and it comes with two 20V lithium batteries, along with items such as a snow foam lance and a collapsible bucket.

Reviews for this one seem really strong, and you'd hope so at this price, but it is subject to a £19 coupon deal at the moment, bringing the price down to £180, so if you're after big power for a relatively small price, this might be the one for you.

Away from Amazon, some of the best deals out there at the minute include 25% off the Karcher K2 Power Control Pressure Washer which makes it £89.98 at Toolstation, or the Spear & Jackson Pressure Washer which also has 25% off making it £82.50 at Argos.
