Eamonn Holmes defends Brendan Rodgers after Celtic boss was blasted for 'sexism'
Eamonn Holmes has defended Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers after he was slammed for "casual sexism".
The current Celtic head coach was involved in a bizarre showdown with the BBC’s Jane Lewis following his side's win against Motherwell over the weekend. He stormed off in the middle of his post-match interview, while also making a strange “good girl” remark.
During the chat, he discussed his side's performance and said: "There's a story being written about this group, but we'll write our own story." There was a bit of back and forth between him and Jane when she asked him to expand on his answer. At one point, he said: "Okay, are we done?" He appeared to dart away from the microphone before finishing: "Well done, good girl, cheers."
GB News star Eamonn was quick to defend the Northern Irishman and said it a simple turn of phrase. "He meant good girl," he said. "Brendan Rodgers is from Carnock in Northern Ireland. We say 'good girl' all the time. We are admonished for it all the time because it's not contemporary.

When Brendan talked about the 'story being written about this group', Jane asked him to expand on his answer but he refused. He repeated "no" a few times before continuing: "You know exactly what I mean."

Jane replied: "I'm actually not sure exactly what you mean. Can you tell us? People might be interested to know. You're the one that's bringing it up so..." At that point, he asked if they were done with the conversation and proceeded to call her a "good girl". The comment infuriated many viewers and received criticism from the Scottish Feminist Network.
A spokesperson said: “Jane Lewis was just doing her job, trying to extract an explanation from Brendan Rodgers on his cryptic comment. That the go-to attitude was condescension is quite illuminating, but really very depressing in 2024. We thought dinosaurs were extinct.”
Fans also rushed to social media to slam the head coach with one user writing: "Trying his hardest to push this 'we'll write our own story' hoping to get fans back on his side. I had respect for Ange and what he achieved but this guy is just embarrassing." A second added: "Rattled. 100%"
"Yeah handling the pressure well, fake narratives and condescending to females," a third said. Another added: "This isn't the first time Rodgers has mentioned similar to this. Does he not realise is coming from his own fans??" A fifth said: "Did Brendan Rodgers really just refer to a female journalist as good girl? That’s outrageous, he’s lost it."
