Amy Schumer opened up about her health after facing attacks by online trolls over her "puffy face".

After a few days of public ridicule, Amy spoke out to reveal that she had been diagnosed with Cushing's Syndrome which makes an individual immunosuppressed and causes puffiness around their face. According to the NHS, Cushing's syndrome is a condition caused by having too much of a hormone called cortisol, the stress hormone, in your body.

The syndrome is treatable, rare, and reversible. However, if not addressed, Cushing's can lead to serious medical complications including heart attack, blood clots, strokes, and memory loss. It's not just the puffiness in the face that may indicate an issue, but also an array of symptoms like easy bruising, weak muscles, and thin arms and legs.

The increase of cortisol levels can be caused from external factors like steroids or other medical treatments. However, it can also be caused by a tumor or an issue in a person's glands. The diagnosis is three times more common in women than men, according to Dr. Elizabeth Comen.

Amy said in Dr. Jessica Yellin's News Not Noise newsletter: "It has been a crazy couple [of] weeks for me and my family. Aside from fears about my health, I also had to be on camera having the internet chime in. But thank God for that. Because that’s how I realised something was wrong. So finding out I have the kind of Cushing that will just work itself out and I’m healthy was the greatest news imaginable."

Dr. Yellin invited another doctor with more specialised knowledge on the issue, Dr. Comen, to speak on the issue through an Instagram live. Dr. Comen explained the condition, noting: "There are many different causes of Cushing's syndrome what it essentially means is an abnormal elevated amount of cortisol, the stress hormone in our bodies made by the adrenal gland, but there's lots of different ways that can be elevated."

Amy wrote on Instagram: "I also believe a woman doesn’t need any excuse for her physical appearance and owes no explanation. But I wanted to take the opportunity to advocate for self love and acceptance of the skin you’re in. Like every other women/person some days I feel confident and good as hell and others I want to put a bag over my head."

The actress also previously attributed her appearance to endometriosis which is a reproductive disorder affecting the uterus and its lining. While Amy noted that endometriosis is an autoimmune disease, the Global Autoimmune Institute reports that "endometriosis has not been classified as an autoimmune condition."
