The PlayStation Portal isn’t the only way to play your PS5 on the go, here’s how to play PlayStation games on your phone.

For those who don’t want to invest in a PlayStation Portal, Sony's latest portable gaming device, don't panic, because you can play PlayStation on your phone via the PS Remote Play app. You don’t even need an external controller to play PS5 games on your phone, as the controls pop up on your touchscreen.

But, if you want your phone to feel like one of the best gaming handhelds on the market when playing PlayStation games, then you can also pick up a Backbone One controller which your phone slots into. It garnered a pretty impressive four out of five stars in our review.

How to play PlayStation on your phone

To play PlayStation on your phone, you’ll first need to own a PS5 or PS4 console. You’ll also need a mobile device which allows you to access the Google Play Store or Apple App Store so that you can install the PS Remote Play app.

How to install the PS Remote Play app on your phone

From the Google Play Store or the App Store, download and install the PS Remote Play app on your mobile device. You can use the same app to connect to your PS5 console and PS4 console. You'll only need to do these steps the first time you use this app.

How to set up your PS5 for PS Remote Play

  1. From the home screen, select Settings > System > Remote Play, and then turn on Enable Remote Play.

  2. To start PS Remote Play while your PS5 console is in rest mode, select Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Then select the checkboxes for Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.

You’ll only need to do this the first time you use PS Remote Play.

How to start playing PlayStation on your phone

You'll need to take the following steps each time you connect to your PS5 or PS4 console from your mobile device.

  1. Turn on your console or put it into rest mode. Launch PS Remote Play on your mobile device, and then select Sign In to PSN.

  2. Sign in with the same account that you use for your console. Select PS5 or PS4.

  3. The app searches for the console that you’ve signed in to using your account and then connects to the console automatically.

After it connects, the screen of your console displays on your mobile device and you can start using PS Remote Play. If multiple consoles are found, select the console that you'd like to use. From the second time onwards, you'll be able to select the console that you connected to previously.

PS Remote Play restrictions

  • Some games don't support Remote Play.
  • Games that require peripherals, such as PSVR 2, PlayStation VR or PlayStation Camera, aren’t compatible with Remote Play.
  • You can’t use the following functions at the same time as Remote Play:
    • Using Share Play
    • Broadcasting gameplay (only when using Remote Play to control a PS4 console)
    • Playing a Blu-ray Disc or DVD
    • PSVR 2 or PS VR mode
    • Playing music
    • Watching video services
    • Depending on the game, some images may not be displayed while using Remote Play.
    • In some cases, you may not be able to use Remote Play while multiple other features are in use.

Also, be aware that when you are using a third-party wireless controller when using Remote Play, some of the controller's features may be restricted and some may be unsupported.
