Bukayo Saka chose not to rise to Rio Ferdinand’s claim that he is “not world class” after his scintillating display against Newcastle.

The Arsenal academy graduate shone during the Gunners’ 4-1 win on Saturday afternoon. He netted Arsenal’s third of the game to claim his 16th goal of the season in all competitions.

It has also extended his goalscoring run to seven goals in his last five Premier League appearances. Asked if his strike was “world class” by TNT Sport, he chuckled before replying: "No comment.

“I am happy with another goal today and more importantly happy to win. I am working hard every day and giving my best. Obviously I have great teammates giving me good passes which helps as well."

Saka’s tight-lipped response comes after an exchange between former Manchester United defender Ferdinand and Arsenal fans. He suggested that Saka was not among the best players in the world.

Asked if he was world class, Ferdinand replied: "Not yet. Listen, I think Saka’s been unreal. I actually think he needs a bit of a rest, so many games for a young kid.

"But I think, it’s almost like what is world-class? He hasn’t done it in the Champions League, has he? I’m talking in the nitty-gritty stages. Saka’s top, don’t get me wrong. He’s not world-class yet."

Ferdinand then doubled down on his claim during a flight over to Porto for the Gunners’ Champions League bout. He shared the trip with a number of Arsenal supporters and had the chance to speak over the plane’s tannoy.

In a video shared on social media, Ferdinand said: "Hello guys, I just want to say it's been an absolute pleasure travelling with you Arsenal fans," which triggered cheers.

He added: "I must say, Saka is a fantastic player, just not world class yet. He will be, just not yet," which encouraged the Arsenal fans break out into a Saka-themed chant.

One man who has already disputed Ferdinand’s claim is Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. He has already suggested that Saka is one of the best players in world football.

"You don’t have to win a Premier League title to be world-class,” the Frenchman said. “For me, I think he is going in that direction if he isn’t already there. Players that find a way to be effective, no matter what you throw at them. They have to be world-class.”

Saka will be aiming to make Ferdinand eat his words for the rest of the campaign. The Gunners now have to wait for their next Premier League game against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on March 4. Should the wideman score just once more in the league this term, then it will be the joint-most prolific campaign of his career so far.
