This Morning viewers have been left divided as the show's team introduced the newest member to their team.

Fans of the ITV show have been left touched by a heartwarming picture of This Morning presenter Dermot O'Leary holding an adorable new puppy in his arms, while co-star Alison Hammond and celebrity vet Dr Scott Miller stood at his side.

The trio are seen beaming from ear-to-ear as they introduced the adorable pooch to viewers on the show's official Instagram page. The picture had the caption: "Welcome to our #ThisMorning family Buddy!"

Under the comments section, The Morning chef Julie Sear revealed that she was looking forward to giving the pup some delicious treats and welcoming him on board. She said: "Awwww buddy!! How cute!! Hope to meet him next week." But some people were quick to point out the team had sponsored a service dog.

One person said: "Aww he’s adorable!! I love that they have a service dog joining the family. Welcome Buddy!" However, others were left disappointed the show hadn't taken a rescue dog under their wings.

Service dogs or assistance dogs are specially trained to help a person or group of people with a disability, but rescue dogs are those given a new home after being abused, neglected, or abandoned by their previous owner.

One person said: "It's a shame it wasn't a rescue dog." But some people were quick to leap to the show's defense, with one person commenting: "it’s going to become a Guide dog for someone well deserved."

Some people felt that not adopting a rescue dog was a missed opportunity for Alison, who is set present For The Love Of Dogs. The beloved series goes behind the scenes at Battersea Cats and Dogs Home as it tries to find new owners for its abandoned animals. It was originally hosted by comedian Paul O'Grady, who passed away last spring.

In January, Alison announced the exciting news that she was set to present the show. She said: “I am very aware that I can never replace the iconic Paul in this wonderful series, but if I can continue to shine a light on the brilliant work done at Battersea and help to tell the stories of these beautiful dogs, then it will be an absolute privilege to give it my all.

"I can’t wait to share the joy of their searches for new loving forever homes and hopefully make lots of furry friends of my own along the way."

While Satmohan Panesar, Commissioning Editor for ITV said: "We are thrilled to be able to confirm that the series will return in the spring and that the dogs have a brand-new champion in Alison Hammond.

"As Paul O'Grady always said himself, the stars of the show were the dogs themselves, but the impact that he had and the legacy he leaves will never be forgotten by any of us.

"We can't wait to welcome back the series with Alison; there will be all the fun and warmth that our viewers have come to expect whilst continuing to showcase the wonderful and important work done by the incredible team at Battersea.”
