Taking a closer look at the frontrunners of the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards

As the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards are nearly upon us, we're taking a closer look at who the top contenders this year are - with many movie buffs predicting Barbenheimer, Poor Things, and The Holdovers will sweep up the awards.

As the three box-office hits have dominated award shows this year, they are expected to continue their winning streak as they are likely going to be the frontrunners for the 30th annual SAG Awards. The cast of the Barbie movie, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, and The Holdovers have been nominated for a number of the 13 categories honoring the best in film and television over the past year.

The feminist comedy the Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and historical biopic Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy are once again facing head-to-head in a number of categories as they lead in nominations with nods in four categories each. The Barbie movie also stood out this year as it was also recognized in the stunt performance category facing up against the action-packed films Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

This year Emma Stone is expected to win big as she has been projected to take home the award for Outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role following her iconic performance as Bella Baxter in Poor Things. In the category, Emma will be facing off with a number of talented actresses including Barbie movie's Margot Robbie, Killers of the Flower Moon's Lily Gladstone, Maestro's Carey Mulligan, and Nyad's Annette Bening.

Another actor expected to take home trophies this year is Robert Downey Jr. for the category Outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role following his performance as American government official Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer. For this category Robert has some steep competition as he faces off against Barbie's Ryan Gosling, American Fiction's Sterling K. Brown, Poor Things' Willem Dafoe, Killers of the Flower Moon's Robert De Niro.

Actress Da'Vine Joy Randolph is also projected to win for Outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role following her memorable role as cafeteria manager and head cook Mary Lamb in The Holdovers. She will be up for the award against Oppenheimer's Emily Blunt, The Color Purple's Danielle Brooks, Ferrari's Penélope Cruz, and Nyad's Jodie Foster.

The category up for the most debate at the SAG Awards this year are the Outstanding performance by a male actor award category. For the category, experts are divided on who will take home the win as talented stars Cillian Murphy and Paul Giamatti are both nominated for the honor.

Cillian, for his performance as the tortured protagonist of Oppenheimer theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and Paul for his captivating role as the classics teacher Paul Hunham in The Holdovers. While it will be a cut-throat competition, many are convinced that Cillian will take home the win following his hauntingly convincing performance.

Fans can tune in for the 2024 SAG Awards live on Netflix starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Saturday, February 24th. The ceremony will take place at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles.
