Love Island fans said Maya Jama was made to host the ITV2 show as she made her debut tonight.

The programme is back for a brand new Winter series, with a new set of Islanders hopeful they might find the one during their time in the South African villa. Maya has taken over hosting duties from Laura Whitmore, who stepped down last year.

As the new series kicked off tonight, fans rushed to social media to praise Maya's presenting skills as they described her as a perfect fit for the ITV2 show following Laura's exit from the programme. They said she was more similar to ex-host Caroline Flack than Laura - saying she was a "natural" at presenting the show just like Caroline had been.

"It’s soo good to have #Maya presenting #LoveIsland someone with a great personality and just the right amount of cheekiness. Just like Caroline," one fan shared, whilst a second added: "This is Maya’s island and they are just living in it #LoveIsland."

A third wrote: "Maya was made for this role @MayaJama #LoveIsland."

"You'd think Maya had done this for years, queen #LoveIsland," a fourth penned, with a fifth writing: "Maya’s been in the villa more times in one episode than Laura did for a whole season. #LoveIsland."

Maya previously revealed she's been a fan of Love Island "for years".

She said: "I've been a fan for years. It was the first reality show, other than Big Brother, that I made sure I was back at a certain time to watch and all my friends and family were speaking about. Everyone gets involved.

"Everyone has opinions - from the older people in your family to the younger ones. It’s just fun, it’s fun to see how people play out in different situations and wonder what you would do if you were in the same position."

The presenter is hopeful this year's crop of singletons are ready to get "stuck in".

Asked what makes a good Islander, she said: "Someone that’s looking for love, someone with a lively personality, somebody who is open and shares their feelings, but also someone that’s not afraid to keep their options open and test the waters.

"Just someone that’s willing to get stuck in and get fully involved in every bit of the experience and all the challenges. Make the most of it! And allow it to be a proper test and see if your relationship can carry on through that, rather than play it safe."
