Brits voted Spaghetti Bolognese as their star meal is sure to infuriate the former mayor of Bologna. Spaghetti bolognese is often thought to have originated as a ragu sauce in Bologna, but historians claim it was actually the city of Imola, a bit further west.

Fed-up Italian politician, Virginio Merola, branded Spag Bol “fake news” four years ago during a trip to the UK. The Italian politician slammed the Brits for using spaghetti in the dish, as it doesn’t hold ragù as well as wider tagliatelle, fettuccine and pappardelle.

He insisted: “Spaghetti bolognese doesn't actually exist, yet it's famous the world over. Of course we are happy that it draws attention to our city, but we would prefer to be known for the quality food that is part of our culinary tradition. What we'd prefer the world to know is that Bologna invented tagliatelle, tortellini and lasagne. It is strange to be famous all over the world for a dish that isn’t ours.”

‌The research from British Lion eggs quizzed 2,000 people. Gary Ford, from British Lion eggs, says: “It’s clear from the research that the way families are cooking has changed over the last few years, with three quarters of us cooking more meals from scratch in a bid to save money.”

The research also revealed that four in ten (42%) are cooking with more frozen ingredients, while a third (36 percent) say they are buying less pre-prepared food (36%). Seven in 10 (72%) families in the UK say they have a go-to range of cost-saving meals that they regularly cook, with the average family having four in their own personal arsenal.

But seven in 10 (79%) were at a loss, saying they regularly struggle to decide what to cook for dinner. The average family debated for 39 minutes a day about what to eat for their evening meal. Two-thirds (68%) admit that they are sitting down and eating together as a family more in a bid to save money with 71% regularly eating leftovers for lunch the next day.
