A woman has told of her ‘heartbreak’ after her best friend’s fiancé has caused a rift in their friendship that shows no signs of being repaired.

After telling how the women had been best friends for 15 years, seeing each other when they could and often holidaying together, she admitted that the friendship had only become strained when her friend met her soon-to-be-wealthy-husband, Bill.

She said: “I could see by her photos she put and what he put on social media that he was very posh and wealthy,” with behaviour she said was a ‘red flag’ from the start: “When they had been dating for two months I was round her place for a fun sleepover, but the next morning I got a message from Bill saying that I need to leave my friend alone as he is with her now and he will be her best friend.”

She then told how six months into the couple’s relationship the friends agreed to meet: “It was finally time for me to meet him in person. We had planned to go for lunch at a little café and I was excited to meet him as she said she was in love.”

However the day before the meeting, her friend messaged her to say her fiancé had looked the venue up online and was refusing to go as it looked ‘cheap’: “She said he believes only poor people go there.”

After he chose a different lunch venue that she admitted was out of her price range, she revealed she was shocked at her friend’s reaction when she told her she couldn’t afford to go there: “She snapped at me and said: 'Bill isn’t paying for you!' I was very shocked by this as we’ve never spoken to each other like that and I also never expected him to?”

On the morning of the lunch, her friend messaged five minutes before they were due to meet to say the couple had decided to have lunch alone that day instead, with the friends hardly speaking for the next year, until she found out on social media that the couple had got engaged: “I messaged her straight away congratulating her and asked questions about how it all. She was very blunt with the responses, but I thought maybe she was just dealing with a lot of messages at the time.”

However what she read on a group chat left her blindsided: “Two days ago I got a message from them in a group chat saying they don’t want me at their wedding as I’m too “common” and “lower class”; I wouldn’t like any of the food they are serving as it’s too posh for me and none of my clothes would look good on their wedding photos, as I don’t own any designer brands.”

After messaging them back to ask if they were serious, she said her friend had told her she could still send them a wedding gift, she just wasn’t allowed to attend the wedding or the reception.

She said: “I don’t know what to do? I’ve known her for 15 years; we’ve grown up together and helped each other, but since she’s been with Bill she has changed for the worse.”

After revealing her friendship dilemma on Reddit she was met with a huge amount of support: “I’m sorry to tell you this, but she is not your best friend,” said one. “Try to let her go and fill your life with people who value and appreciate you for who you are. She does not deserve your friendship.”

Another reader agreed, commenting: “This is not a friend anymore. She decided to cast her old life aside for a life of luxury, and I’m sorry, but that includes you."

Many believed the friend would live to regret her actions: “Life has a way of knocking the pedestal out from under these kind of people. I promise you that,” said one, while another said: “Time to cut her loose. She chose money over you. It reflects in her attitude. Please remember that money cannot buy class. In 10 years he will drop her to replace her with a younger woman."
