Hundreds of people stood in line for hours to get their hands on 'Britain's cheapest' fish and chip meal for just 75p.

Instead of charging usual £5.70, Dr Vinegars Extraordinary Fish & Chips offered the super cheap deal when it opened its doors in Wolverhampton. Huge lines of excited customers formed around the car park of the new chippy from as early as 11am yesterday (Thursday, February 23). The bargain meal, which includes a portion of the shop's special 'orange chips' and a mini-fillet, cost just 75p.

Even though each customer could only get one portion, hundreds still came to the shop despite the bad weather. Nicola Jones, 55, from Wednesfield, West Midlands, was the first in line after she started queueing at 11.30am. Mum-of-one Nicola said: "They were delicious. I think it's only us in the Midlands that do the orange chips. They have this unique coating on them.

"The only reason I came to Dr Vinegar is because my son has the shop next door. They've been trading for a few weeks. It was word of mouth for me. We arrived at about 11am, then about half 11 we stepped out a bit. Then the masses came. I was first one who came. A good 50 or 60 people came straight away, then they just kept coming. It was constant. I was quite pleased I was at the front. I'll be a regular now.

"I thought they were excellent. For the price they were charging, they were superb. The chips were good, nice thick pieces of cod. It was all fresh. The standard was excellent. I wouldn't expect anything else. It's usually £2.20 for a cone. I think a fish and chip meal these days is usually around £6 or £7."

Another customer, Matt Nichol, 29, from Willenhall, West Midlands, said: "I wasn't going to miss out on what's surely the cheapest fish and chips in the country. They were really lovely too, I queued for about an hour but it was well worth it. I'll be coming back."

Shop owner Royston Spencer got ready for the big day by ordering lots of mini-fishes. This new chippy has all your favourites like fish and chips, kebabs, sausages, and Pukka pies. But what people really love here are the 'orange chips' - they're special chips with a secret recipe that makes them glow orange.
