Valentine's Day is over and it's time to roll in the Easter eggs and munch on a packet of Cadbury's Mini Eggs, but fans of the iconic chocolates say "you need to take out a loan" if you plan on buying any this year.

It's no secret that going to the supermarket has become less and less enjoyable as we have seen the price of food items rise significantly due to the rising cost of living crisis. If only we could go back to the bliss days of pulling out a few pennies for a chocolate treat. Remember when Freddos only cost 10p?

Cadbury fans have branded the skyrocketing prices as "shambolic" and "disgusting". It comes after chocolate lovers discovered a large bag of 1kg Mini Eggs will now set you back a whopping £17.50. Some claimed they could do a weekly food shop for the same price. But, Mondelēz, who owns Cadbury, say raising the prices was the company's "last resort".

"We still face considerable challenges," they added.

The 110g Mini Eggs Bar has also increased in Tesco and Morrisons from £1 to £1.25. If you are looking for a 38.3g carton of Mini Eggs Carton in Tesco or Morrisons you will need more than 50p as they have now risen to 60p. What's more, a 95g bar of Dairy Milk increased has increased by 8% and the Christmas staple Cadbury Milk Tray has increased by 50% since 2013.

Sharing their fury, a number of chocolate lovers took to social media to comment on the new prices. "How are Mini Eggs more expensive than chicken," one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Another poster said: "£17.50 for a pack of Mini Eggs. Ridiculously expensive but my god I'd hoover them up like a Dyson with a nice coffee." Someone else commented: "Someone please invent Mini Eggs that aren't so expensive - I have to take out a loan to buy them."

"I love Mini Eggs but they are so expensive this year," tweeted another. Another said: "The price of Mini Eggs nowadays is actually disgusting, but they're so good."

A Mondelēz International spokesperson told The Mirror that ingredients such as sugar and cocoa have become increasingly more expensive, in turn costing the company a lot more to produce their famous treats. However, Mondelēz insists fans do not have to worry about the taste and quality being comprised.

The company said: "We understand the economic pressures that consumers continue to face, and raising cost prices is a last resort for our business. However, as a food producer, we are continuing to experience significantly higher input costs across our supply chain, with ingredients such as cocoa and sugar, which are widely used in our products, costing far more than they have done previously."

"This means that our products continue to be much more expensive to make and while we have absorbed these costs where possible, we still face considerable challenges.

"As a result, we are having to make some carefully considered cost price increases so that we can continue to provide consumers with the brands they love, without compromising on the great taste and quality they enjoy."
