Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has attempted to play down speculation linking him with both Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Alonso has done an excellent job since taking over at Leverkusen in 2022, with the club eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and on the cusp of winning their first ever league title. As a result, the Spaniard has been linked with the manager's job at two of his former clubs.

Jurgen Klopp has announced he will be stepping down as Liverpool boss at the end of the season, a club where Alonso spent five years as a player. Bayern, where Alonso played for three seasons before retiring, have also announced that current manager Thomas Tuchel will be leaving this summer.

Alonso is currently among the favourites for both jobs, but refused to be drawn on what his future may hold when quizzed ahead of Leverkusen's game against Mainz. "Right now I am Bayer Leverkusen coach and that's certain," he replied.

"Regarding the future, I have nothing new to say." And when asked if either he or his agent had received a call from Bayern after they confirmed Tuchel would be leaving at the end of the season, he added: "That's only hypothetical. Again — I have nothing new to say."

Leverkusen's sporting director Simon Rolfes has also said he is "sure" Alonso will still be the club's manager next season. When asked about Alonso's future earlier this month, he told Sport1 : "Yes, I'm sure [he will stay].

"One is contract constellations. The other thing is how comfortable he feels, the family, himself and that he knows what he has in the club. He also has a very good team, we will have a very good perspective next year and there is no change in the team.

"We will definitely have a top team available next year. These are all points that - in addition to contracts - coaches like Xabi, but also players who [attract] interest, often stay with us. He surprises me every now and then.

"What we and he always say internally: Everyone has their role and we have a good squad. Everyone has the quality to play a good role. Xabi has the courage to not only commit to an eleven, but also to say: I'll adapt the system and bring other guys onto the pitch. We are not trapped in the system that is based on how we play football."
