Paloma Faith turned down a large sum of cash and refused to let one of her songs be used during the Super Bowl.

The outspoken singer has never shied away from sharing her personal beliefs and standing up for causes she truly believes in. Paloma, 42, often uses her platform to give a voice to marginalised communities in order to promote equality across the board.

Now, the Enjoy Yourself songstress has revealed that she has turned down a number of lucrative offers - that would have propelled her career even further - in order to stay true to herself. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, the hitmaker explained that she even refused to work in partnership with the recent Super Bowl, despite it being a global stage.

"I do think ethics are really important," she told me, adding: "I was offered a big opportunity recently to use a song in an advert in the Super Bowl and it was for an association that didn't align with me. I did my research, found that out and was like 'No, I won't take the fee and I won't take the opportunity'.

"I do feel I've had quite a few times in my career, I've had opportunities that could have really propelled me forward but they've always been situations that have made me compromise my ethics – I'm not prepared to do that, I'd rather have the career that I have and be true to my belief system than jump and be a global, international success that's compromised on my ethics and moral code."

The Stoke Newington-born star is back with her sixth studio album, The Glorification of Sadness, which is her most honest and personal work to date. Paloma opens up about the breakdown of her relationship with Leyman Lahcine, the father of her two young children.

Reflecting on the record, she said: "At the time when I was writing it, I didn't think of it becoming a commercial thing. I was just writing for my own therapy. I did feel that I went through a bit of a mental breakdown during my break-up and I've not felt that displaced or lost, ever in my life.

"I think it was the thing that replanted or reanchored me, it was therapy. When the body of work started to take form, it felt a bit weird to put that into the world, it felt very private before. That's why I've called it The Glorification of Sadness because it was a commodification of my own life trauma, it's not something that I'm distanced from – it's genuine real life, there's kids involved, it's very sensitive."

This year, Paloma has teamed up with Comic Relief and Amazon for the official single of Red Nose Day and revealed she was left completely speechless when she was approached by the charity. She explained her life has been filled with memories surrounding Red Nose Day and the "icons" who are part of the organisation and admits it's "surreal" to be part of the group.

"I hope it helps the poverty crisis, every little bit helps," she said of the single, adding: "I find my charity work and allyship with different causes a really important part of what I do. I hope it goes towards helping the poverty crisis." Later this year, Paloma will head out on tour, with performances at the likes of Thetford Forest as part of Forest Live and Margate Summer Series.

"It's my favourite thing to do," she said of touring, before saying: "It's the reason why I do this job, being on stage, connecting with people who are there to see me and sing my songs with me. It's just the most privileged situation to be in and the only time I'm not anxious, weirdly. I find life quite overwhelming, daily life, on stage, I never feel overwhelmed, I feel like I'm in my right place, I'm really looking forward to it."

This year's Red Nose range is available on Amazon now, with free One-Day Delivery for all customers. Paloma Faith's Enjoy Yourself (The Red Nose Day Edition) is out now via Amazon Music and other streaming platforms, in aid of Comic Relief.
