Emergency 911 services across the US have crashed as several networks including AT&T are down, authorities has confirmed.

Several police departments have warned people have been unable to call or text 911 at this time. The issue is said to have stretched as far as Canada. Flagler County Sheriff's Office in Florida tweeted: "AT&T is experiencing an outage. Subscribers are unable to call or text 911."

The first outages were reported to have taken place at around 4am Eastern time. Disruption has been recorded in New York, Washington, Montreal, Boston, Honolulu, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco.

More than 31,000 AT&T users reported issues by 4.30am, according to Down Detector. Whilst over 800 service outages were recorded for U.S. wireless carriers Verizon. T-Mobile users were also hit with the problem.

Across states, 911 operators have stressed that the issue has hindered their ability to recieve calls. Smaller networks such as Straight Talk, Boost Mobile and Consumer Cellular are believing to also be struggling with the issue.

Currently, At&T users who own an iPhone claim their phone is stuck in SOS mode - which means they can only make calls to emergency services.

Phone users have taken to Twitter to express their outrage over the crash, with some stating they have been unable to use their phones for at least 4 hours. Several users said they woke up to find their phone "stuck" on SOS.

One person compared the outage to the Netflix horror movie, Leave The World Behind, which focuses on two families who are left struggling through a blackout.

Someone tweeted: "I’m in a different state, I need my GPS to navigate to work and the airport and #ATT got my fight for my life." Another commented: " @ATT our phones are in SOS mode. we do not have service. yall need to wake up and fix this."

Meanwhile, another user questioned whether it was a "massive cyber attack" or a simple malfunction. They said: "AT&T cellular service down. Downdetector reporting numerous cell services with issues.

"Is this a massive cyber attack on the cellular infrastructure? Was there a solar flare or satellite malfunction? The issue appears to be nationwide, if not international."

Whilst there is not much users can do at this time, those who are trapped in SOS mode can try two methods to get their phone to return to normal.

According to Laptopmag, users can attempt to swipe down from the upper-right corner of their screen and tap on the green Cellular Data icon to turn off their phone and then switch it back on.

Alternatively, people have been advised to try and soft reset their phone. None of the main phone companies have issued statements regarding the mass problem. It remains unclear what caused the outages.
