Alec Baldwin was involved in a crime and now the actor's career is at risk.

The actor has pleaded not guilty to the charge of involuntary manslaughter after the death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust. This is the second time he's been charged since Halyna, who was the cinematographer of the film, died in 2021.

The first charge was dropped due to questions regarding the Colt .45 functionality after Alec claimed he never even pulled the trigger. During the original FBI investigation, the Colt was broken, bringing the investigation to a further standstill after Alec's claim. Here is what we know about the case so far.

Why is Alec Baldwin on trial for Rust shooting?

The shooting happened while Alec was holding the gun on the movie set outside of Santa Fe. He was holding the gun during rehearsal when it discharged a live round. A bullet not only hit Halyna but also Rust director, Joel Souza, who was wounded but was later revived.

The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office and the FBI said that the only way the gun could only have shot both Halyna and Joel was if the trigger was pulled. According to Deadline, no lawyer or suspect has been able to provide an answer on how the rounds got on set.

Alec's attorney hoped for a "speedy trial" in January when Alec pleaded not guilty to the charge of involuntary manslaughter. If he is found guilty, Alec could face up to a prison sentence of 18 months to three years and around $5,000 in fines.

Who else is involved with Rust shooting?

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was also involved as she worked on the film as the armorer and is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter. Hannah is facing up to three years behind bars if found guilty by a New Mexico jury. While being responsible for proper handling of the firearms on set, she admitted to detectives that she smoked marijuana after completing her work for the day. Hannah is also accused of handling a bag of cocaine the day of the shooting.
