Liverpool host Luton Town on Wednesday night looking to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League.

The Reds recorded a resounding victory at the weekend and will be firm favourites to see off the Hatters, who managed to hold them to a draw at Kenilworth Road earlier this season. Jurgen Klopp continues to work without a full squad as he deals with constant injuries.

Saturday's win came at a cost in that sense as the Reds remain in contention for four honours with the Carabao Cup final around the corner.

They are also due to resume European action soon whilst Arsenal and Manchester City remain hot on their heels in the Premier League. Here's the latest from Anfield.

Jota facing months out

Klopp has confirmed that Diogo Jota will be ruled out "for months" after he picked up a knee injury against Brentford at the weekend.

The Portuguese forward was taken off on a stretcher against the Bees and he'll be out until at least April. Reports from Jota's homeland suggested that he had avoided a long-term knee issue, but that he would be sidelined for two months, which means he will miss key matches domestically and in Europe.

His manager said about his situation: "With Diogo it will take months [not weeks]. I couldn't say a timeframe even if I wanted to. That is just how it is. When you don't have these players it makes no sense [to speculate]."

Klopp backed for Germany role

Former Chelsea star Michael Ballack has backed the outgoing Jurgen Klopp to eventually take the Germany job - potentially by the next World Cup.

Klopp announced last month that he'll be leaving Anfield and speculation is already mounting about his next job. Ballack hopes that the ex-Borussia Dortmund and Mainz boss can return to his homeland to take charge of their national team, who have struggled in major tournaments as of late.

Julian Nagelsmann only got the job last September with Germany going through their worst run of form for decades. They'll host Euro 2024 this summer with Nagelsmann at the helm, but Ballack reckons Klopp could be in charge for the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking on Jeff Stelling's podcast, Football's Greatest, the former Chelsea playmaker said: "Of course, in a normal career, one day he would become manager of the German national team, everyone is looking for that."

Sporting directors identified

Liverpool have added Frederic Massara and Florent Ghisolfi to their shortlist as they look to fill their vacant sporting director position. The Reds are looking for a new chief after Jorg Schmadtke departed Anfield at the end of the January transfer window. Schmadtke arrived after Julian Ward, who took over from Michael Edwards, left last summer with the club struggling for continuity in that position.

The Merseyside club are facing up to a summer of monumental change. They are prioritising the appointment of a sporting director before turning attention to Klopp's replacement with Xabi Alonso understood to be their preferred candidate.
