Locals in Edinburgh say they have been left puzzled by a series of odd "road signs" that have suddenly appeared on one of the city's busiest streets.

The council has confirmed that the placards, which started appearing in the Leith and Newhaven areas of the city last week, are not official road signs. While resembling standard traffic management signs at first glance, closer inspection reveals a big difference. The signs reference YLT, or Young Leith Team - the notorious street gang, according to EdinburghLive.

Local resident Julia, who did not want to give her surname, said: "I live close by and saw these when I walked past earlier this morning and I am very interested in what this means." She also expressed concern about the signs looking like real road signs, adding: "However, I am a little concerned they have made them look like road signs, motorists might get confused as to where they can and can't go. Leith Walk is already as confusing as ever with the introduction of the tram and other lanes."

"I do hope the council takes them down if they are not legitimate as they could cause some confusion." Another local, Andrew, said: "I've seen a few of these recently where I live and a few down in the Newhaven area. I have no idea what they mean, and if these are new signs introduced by the DVLA I can wholeheartedly say that I would fail a modern-day theory test if I was given one tomorrow."
