Prince Harry has seemingly had a change of heart when it comes to his relationship with the royal family - but is aware he has a long way to go before he is welcomed back into the fold.

News of his father's cancer diagnosis is said to have been a 'wake up call' for the Duke of Sussex, who promptly jumped on a plane back to the UK to visit the King. Harry and Charles are said to have had several "warm exchanges" via telephone before Harry flew from his California home to the UK last week.

And while they spent just 30 minutes together, sources later stated that Harry, who quit as a senior royal with Meghan Markle in 2020, is willing to return to a temporary royal role to support his ailing father.

However, insiders close to the royals have dismissed that idea - with Prince William especially opposed to Harry's return. An insider confirmed to the Mirror that the future King now believes Harry and his wife Meghan simply "cannot be trusted".

It seems Harry is keenly aware of the work he will need to put in in order to return to the royal fold following the couple's very public attacks on the monarchy.

A royal source told OK magazine: "Meghan doesn't want anything to do with it and is keen to stay away from England, but Harry is of the opinion that he must repair the damage that has been caused.

"There have been plenty of emotional conversations and heart to hearts over the best way to handle the situation and move forward. Harry wants to put an end to the feud and regrets the way that things have turned out.

"There's no plan B for Harry, patching things up with his family is the only option. It's finally hit home how difficult it will be to repair the damage caused by the various swipes at his family over the years."

The insider added: "Harry wants to spend more time in the UK and bring the children over to be with their grandparents and cousins, but he will have to prove himself first. That's been made very clear to him."

Prince William did not see his younger brother during his fleeting visit to the UK, and royal sources told the Mirror there is "no chance" the heir would allow his brother back. "Whatever has been discussed between William and the King is private, but it is absolutely and categorically clear that he (William) would not allow Harry to return.

"He thought it was a bad idea at the time and he's even more clear now. If anyone is going to take on more duties it will be William and that isn't even on the agenda for now. His main focus is on his father's health, his family and what is best for the monarchy. There is a zero per cent chance Harry is coming back in any capacity."
