Greg James has revealed his grandmother has died at the age of 100 after fans speculated about why he took the day off work on Monday.

The BBC Radio 1 DJ, 38, was nowhere to be heard on the Breakfast Show on Monday morning, with Matt Edmondson stepping in to host the first show of the week. Greg explained his Radio 1 absence on social media later in the day. Writing on his Instagram Stories, Greg told fans: "A pretty rotten week. Got rid of Covid then yesterday my lovely 100 year old Nan died so have spent a nice quiet day today with family."

Writing over a snap of his dog Barney, Greg continued: "Excited to be back on the radio tomorrow and very much in need of some fun. With you at 7am." The Rise and Fall presenter then discussed the issues with sharing grief publicly and jokingly asked people to stop messaging him.

Sharing a video of himself praising actor Andrew Scott's recent Bafta red carpet look, Greg quipped: "Grief takes many forms. Mine appears to be thirsting after Andrew Scott." He then went on to tell his followers: "Ps. Thank you very much for your nice messages. You're very very kind. I sort of wanted to say something because I've been out of the loop the last couple of days and haven't really got back to anyone or said anything and my job requires me to be honest and open and I love that about it.

"However, the new influx of messages means the problem is now exacerbated and I have even more people to reply to. I should have done that thing where families say please respect our privacy which essentially means piss off doesn't it. I don't want you to piss off I'm just trying to be funny. IM GRIEVING FFS LEAVE ME ALONE. Don't leave me alone. I'm off to look at more photos of Andrew Scott bye xx." In a final update on his Stories, Greg jokingly concluded: "People are now sending another message to say sorry for sending a message. There aren't getting replied to tonight. I'm grieving soz x."

Greg's absence from the airwaves on Monday had some listeners worried the popular DJ was joining Jordan North and leaving BBC Radio 1. Jordan confirmed he was leaving the state funded broadcaster over the weekend - with it tipped Burnley-born Jordan, 34, will be replacing Roman on Capital Breakfast.

The I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! star's exit was revealed on Friday, with former Made In Chelsea star Jamie Laing announced as his replacement on the drivetime show with Vick Hope. It's thought Jordan will be the man to takeover from Roman Kemp on Capital Breakfast next month, with a source claiming: "Jordan is moving to Capital FM to replace Roman and he could not be more excited. It is absolutely huge for him and although it’s hard to leave the BBC he is excited to get started on Capital. Jordan’s decision has been a hard pill to swallow for the BBC but there was nothing they could do to change his mind."

"Radio 1 will be saying goodbye to Jordan North," the BBC announced on Friday. "Jordan has been behind some of the most hilarious and entertaining moments on air over the years, and has been a constant source of inspiration for younger presenters. Thank you for everything."
