Donald Trump was found by top academics to have been the worst US President of all time, for a third time in a row, in a major survey.

In a recent poll conducted by the University of Houston and Coastal Carolina University, experts on the American presidency have delivered a resounding verdict: Donald Trump has been ranked the worst president in US history. The survey, the third of its kind by the Presidential Greatness Project, reveals significant shifts in presidential rankings, with Trump's term at the bottom of the list.

The findings, based on responses from nearly 200 scholars across various disciplines, reaffirm Abraham Lincoln as the nation's greatest president, with Franklin Delano Roosevelt surpassing George Washington for the second position.

However, it's Trump's ranking at the bottom, a position he also held in previous surveys, that captures attention and highlights a turbulent era in American politics. Trump was again the lowest-ranked president with James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Franklin Pierce and William Henry Harrison rounding out the bottom five.

The results of the survey come as the disgraced former president keeps asserting he is a "favourite president" in his online rants as well as in his campaign speeches. He is currently fighting four criminal indictments and one civil fraud case, in which he has been ordered to pay over $355 million.

The survey highlights a broader trend where recent Democratic presidents have seen upward mobility in the rankings, while recent Republican presidents, with the exception of Ronald Reagan, have experienced declines.

Coastal Carolina University political science professor Justin Vaughn said: "In the first post-Trump survey, we see a significant bump for recent Democratic presidents with each one moving up in the rankings while each of the recent Republican presidents dropped down, with the exception of President Trump who remained at the bottom of the rankings."

Joe Biden enters the rankings at #14, with a significantly higher rating than Trump's initial assessment in 2018.

Brandon Rottinghaus, co-director of the Presidential Greatness Project said: "Scholars often emphasise stability of norms in assessing presidential greatness, so Joe Biden, serving after a tumultuous Trump administration, entered the survey on a high note."

Beyond Trump's dismal ranking, the survey sheds light on historical reassessments of presidents like Ulysses S. Grant and Andrew Jackson.

Grant's ascent in the rankings reflects a broader rehabilitation of his leadership, while Jackson's decline is attributed to negative historical evaluations of his treatment of Native Americans.

The survey also provides insight into Mount Rushmore considerations, with Roosevelt emerging as the top choice for the next addition to the iconic monument, followed by Obama.
