The Masked Singer's Danny Jones found it 'scary and lonely' singing as Piranha

Thankfully, McFly’s Danny Jones won the Masked Singer or he’d have faced some ribbing from his pal Charlie Simpson.

Charlie won the show last year, while dressed as a Rhino, and this weekend saw Piranha unveiled as Danny, who used to perform as McBusted in a supergroup with Charlie and his Busted bandmates.

“I thought I could win it like Charlie,” he laughs. “I just felt really proud of myself out there on my own as Piranha,” he continues. “Without the rest of McFly, it was a lonely, scary place to be, but I feel like that was a cool place to be and challenge myself personally and it was good for me.”

Danny reckons performing in the giant costume has improved his skills on stage. “Genuinely, this has made me a better singer,” he says. “Now when I’m performing with the band and doing a certain number, Piranha’s going to come out. My vocal coach on the show is incredible. They’ve got me singing stuff I’ve never dreamed of singing. I’ve hit high notes!”

Danny’s six year old son Cooper was surprised to see his dad unveiled on the show, but he had noticed his dad had started singing differently. “I was singing to him in the bath the other night and he was like, ‘Why are you singing this song? Why are you singing like that?’” laughs Danny. “I’ve been singing ballads, singing Celine Dion in the bath.”
