If you go to a busy restaurant or cafe, securing a seat can be tough.

One mum has shared her "unreasonable" restaurant logic, but she was left wondering whether she was in the wrong. The mum said she had been out shopping with her children and wanted to grab some food. The party of four entered a busy local cafe but found there was no space to sit so popped back out again and returned later.

Upon returning, the group found there was an empty table of four in the corner and sat down with their bags before heading to the counter to order their food.

The parent, who shared her story on Mumsnet, added: "At this point, we realised a couple at the counter were complaining about us to the waitress. Apparently, they had been about to sit at our table and as it was the last one available in there and they now had nowhere to sit. Staff were very good and moved things around to get them some chairs but they spent the whole time in there tutting and giving us dirty looks."

The mum couldn't understand why the couple had this attitude noting that her logic when going into a busy restaurant or cafe was to "find a table first then order". She added: "If we waited in line with the kids and then went to find a table and couldn't get one we would be stuck as the kids are too young to take the food or drink as takeout." However, she said after the incident took place she felt "really uncomfortable" and that she did do something wrong.

Commenters were divided on her logic with half supporting it and others against it but some said there needed to be more context to be able to fall on a side. One said: "I'm pretty sure YABU [You Are Being Unreasonable] here, but to get more info, what type of cafe was it? A quick service/fast food type where you order food first then go sit down? A sit-down type cafe where you wait for the server to seat you first? This is important".

Another person said it was always "food first then table, exceptions, elderly or pregnant". A third added: "I vote table first then food. I'm not going to order food if there isn't a table, so the other way round seems a bit daft to me." Commenters clapped back at these asking what single people could do if they were on their own. One said: "It only works if you have a large group of people. What are single people supposed to do?"

Whilst another expressed that they would "never" take a table away from someone who'd already paid and had nowhere to eat their food. Another said: "If people bagging tables before ordering are stopping those that have got their food from sitting down then I think that’s rude, whether a single person or a family."

Others however put the blame on the cafe saying: "This is one of those that always divides people. It's why it's helpful if the venue has clear 'please find a table before ordering' style signs to make it clear."
