Two victims were found with gunshot wounds to the head as police investigate double homicide after previous reports of a murder-suicide when the University of Colorado campus was on Friday.

Thought to be students, two people were found dead inside a campus dorm room with police initially saying it was a possible murder-suicide. Now this is being investigated as a homicide.

The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) issued an update saying: "At this point in our investigation, this incident does not appear to be a murder-suicide and both deaths are being investigated as homicides. We are continuing to develop and follow investigative leads and will provide additional information when it becomes available."

On Friday the campus briefly entered lockdown after the shots were fired, which was lifted after an hour and a half with police spokesperson Ira Cronin saying: "We don't believe at this point that there is any ongoing threat to the community." The campus was closed for the day in response to the shooting.

Police said: "We are in the very early stages of piecing together what happened. We are in the process of notifying family members of the deceased individuals. We don't believe there is an ongoing threat to the community, and we are investigating this as an isolated incident."

CU Colorado Springs said in a note to faculty and staff that emotional support would be available adding: "We know that today has been difficult, and that as a campus we are all grieving. Thank you for your patience, understanding and support as we have worked through this difficult day.”

On Friday CPSD said: "UCCS Police responded and gained access to the dorm room at 6.05 AM. They discovered two deceased individuals, each with at least one gunshot wound."

It continued: "CSPD was notified at approximately 6.10 AM and responded to the scene to assist with initial scene security and assisting in the investigation. The CSPD Homicide unit was notified and at the request of UCCS Police, assumed responsibility for the investigation."

By about 8 am local time, the shelter-in-place order had been lifted, with only those living at Alpine Village, a campus residency, ordered to stay where they were. Everyone else was allowed to leave campus.

The university canceled classes and closed down the campus for the remainder of the day. The police confirmed to local station KKTV that the investigation began after a report of shots fired on the campus.

Local news reporter Josh Helmuth of KRDO13 tweeted that there is a "very large police presence" on the campus and that he and other reporters on the scene were waiting for updates from the university and from the Colorado Springs police.
