A sprawling Patagonian Archipelago island, never-before-inhabited, is up for sale for the first time for a new owner to set up a home in the multi-million dollar venture.

The mass of undeveloped land off the coast of Chile is known as Virgin Island due to its pristine, untouched natural habitat. Now for sale, someone has the opportunity to own the private expanse of land and sea.

Spread across 11,000 deeded acres, the private island is half the size of Hong Kong and several times larger than Manhattan and is around the same size as 5,500 UK football pitches. The island is listed with Jeff Buerger of Hall and Hall and is selling for a current price of $35 million according to Mansion Global.

Buerger told The NY Post: “While islands in general aren’t for everyone, to find an island this size, featuring an abundance of coastline, freshwater, raw beauty, privacy and seclusion is rare”. He added that the area is entirely untouched, which is a rare “opportunity to build” according to the agent.

Sheltered by the Andes mountain range, the stretches of wilderness are varied and uniquely untouched. The range of topography includes over 150 miles of coastline, 80 lagoons, three large lakes, and “high mountains dipping into deep valleys.” There are also areas of jungle and sandbanks. Also featured are peatlands, wetlands and numerous native forests.

The listing said: “The Andes Mountains — the longest mountain range on the planet — extend across the entire length of the Virgin Island, acting as a climatic screen and the territory’s natural insulator. Wildlife exists untouched as it was thousands of years ago.”

The interaction of the diverse ecosystem with the neighbouring islands, fjords, seas, and canals protects the area from environmental change. Meaning the sea and natural habitat is almost pristine.

However, accessing the island can be tricky, but this serves to protect it from wandering visitors. You must travel to Santiago International Airport in Chile, then to Balmaceda Airport, and then take a boat or helicopter to the island to reach its shores. The closest towns are Puerto Aysèn and Puerto Chacabuco on Chile’s mainland.

Another island, part of this cluster has been described as In fact, when the United Nations ran a study counting the flora and fauna which live on the island, they found over 700 endemic species, a host of which haven't been seen anywhere else in the world.

For example, 37 per cent of its 825 plant species and 90 per cent of its reptile species are unique to the islands.
