Gavin And Stacey star Rob Brydon has addressed rumours that he and fellow cast-members of the much-loved BBC series have started filming a reboot.

Fans were sent into meltdown earlier this week after rumours the stars of the show, including writers James Corden and Ruth Jones, were back in action following a well received Christmas special five years ago.

Speaking about the speculation, Rob - who played Uncle Bryn in the hit series - told BBC Radio 4 today that a potential comeback is a question that fans always want to know the answer to.

Speaking on the Today programme, he said: "I get asked about this on every interview I ever do." and "I sound like a politician, as far as I'm aware it's another rumour. I don't know. I mean, I'd love it if it were true."

Earlier, there were stories online saying that the cast would be making a new Christmas special, five years after the last episode ended with everyone wanting to know what happens next.

Ruth Jones, who helped create the show, told RTE Radio 1 on Wednesday that these stories are "sadly a rumour". The Nessa actress said she believes the whispers started after she was spotted having lunch with James Corden, who also created the show, after he came back to the UK from America.

A big American news place said on Tuesday that the new special was being made right now and that Steve Coogan's company, Ruth Jones's company, and one owned by James Corden would be making it.

The sitcom followed the lives of Gavin and Stacey, played by Mathew Horne and Joanna Page who played a young couple caught in a long-distance relationship between Essex and Wales.

The show ran for three series from 2007 to 2010. It came back in 2019 for a Christmas special that continued where the last episode left off.

Smithy, played by James Corden, and Nessa, played by Ruth Jones, had a rocky relationship during the show. The last special ended with a surprise when Nessa asked Smithy to marry her.

The 2019 Christmas episode became a huge hit, bagging the highest overnight Christmas ratings in 12 years, with an average of 11.6 million people watching - making it the most-watched Christmas special since Christmas Day 2008.

By the time New Year rolled around, 17.1 million people had watched the episode. This made it the most popular scripted programme of the decade at that time.

The special also won the impact award at the National Television Awards in 2020.
