Prince Harry says was 'grateful' to visit King Charles and 'I love my family'

Prince Harry has finally spoken out for the first time about his father's cancer diagnosis after he rushed to the UK to spend time with King Charles.

The Duke of Sussex sat down for a tell-all interview with Good Morning America host Will Reeve as he spoke out about how Charles is doing. The monarch was diagnosed with cancer after receiving hospital treatment for an unrelated issue.

Harry said he feels lucky to have been able to visit his father following the diagnosis. He said: "Look I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him I'm grateful for that."

When asked if the diagnosis could have a "reunifying effect" amid their feud, Harry said he is certain it will. "Yeah, I'm sure. Throughout all these families I see it on a day-to-day basis the strength of the family unit coming together. I think any illness, any sickness brings families together," he told the host. However, Harry refused to discuss his father's condition and said "that stays between me and him"..

Elsewhere in the interview, which is set to be released in full later today, Harry will open up about his life with Meghan Markle and his passion for supporting wounded warriors. The Sussexes have been spending time with Will in Canada as part of their three-day Invictus Games trip. GMA have also said Harry will be discussing the possibility of becoming a US citizen.

There have been plenty of questions surrounding Harry's potential US citizenship after he admitted to taking drugs in his memoir Spare. His revelations led to calls for his visa application to be released, so the American taxpayer can understand whether he declared his drug use.

Writing in his memoir, Harry revealed he had dabbled with marijuana, magic mushrooms, ayahuasca, and cocaine in order to try and deal with the death of his mum, Princess Diana. There was speculation that the Duke of Sussex, who resides in California with his family, could be denied US citizenship if he ever applied, as the variety of drugs he admitted to taking are banned or under strict control.

Despite calls for his visa application to be released, US government lawyers determined it should not be disclosed because it is "private personal information". Harry's references to taking drugs prompted a conservative Washington DC think tank to question why he was allowed into the States in 2020.

Harry's GMA interview comes after he recently spent time in the UK to visit his father following the monarch's cancer news. The Duke of Sussex rushed to the UK from Los Angeles last week and sat down for a half an hour chat with the King during his visit. It's believed this was their first proper private conversation for 15 months.

Harry was not joined by his wife for the visit, as she decided to remain in Montecito, California, with their two children. It's been reported that Harry did not see his older brother Prince William during his brief return to the UK.

A source previously told The Mirror there was "nothing in the diary" for them to meet, with William reportedly focusing completely on Princess Kate's surgery recovery at the moment. Harry returned to Los Angeles on Wednesday, having spent just over 24 hours in the UK.

However, it looks like he could be about to return to London again in a matter of weeks. Harry is tipped to travel back in May for the 10th birthday of the Invictus Games. Celebrations are due to take place at St Paul’s Cathedral.

The news comes after the UK government announced a multi-million-pound bid to see the games hosted in Birmingham in 2027. A source close to the project said a British-based Invictus Games would have the approval of both Harry and the rest of the Royal Family. "Harry has indicated that he is comfortable coming back for a British-based Invictus Games and we understand that the Games have always had the support of the rest of the Royal Family," they told The Express.

Harry has developed a fraught relationship with his father in recent years. The Duke of Sussex has hit out at his dad on multiple occasions since stepping back from the Royal Family, accusing the King or lying and making jokes at his son's expense.

Speaking on his and Meghan's bombshell Netflix docuseries, Harry discussed the tense Megxit meeting which took place after the Sussexes announced they would be stepping back from the Royal Family. "It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me, and my father say things that just simply weren't true, and my grandmother quietly sit there, and sort of take it all in," Harry recalled. He said the "saddest part" was the "wedge" it drove between him and his family.

He had previously claimed his father had even "stopped taking my calls" and admitted there was "a lot to work through" to try and fix their relationship. In Harry and Meghan's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, he said: "I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar, he knows what pain feels like."

Harry added: "I will always love him. There’s a lot of hurt that’s happened. I will continue to make it one of my priorities to heal that relationship."
