Love Island's baffled fans fume 'it doesn't make sense' over huge format change

Love Island All Stars fans were left baffled on Thursday night when there was a major shake up to a long-standing show rule.

There are only four more days of the spin-off series remaining before one lucky couple will be crowned winners. At this stage in the traditional version of Love Island, family members of the remaining couples will fly to the villa to meet the contestants and get to know the boy or girl their daughter or son has coupled up with.

But the All Stars version of the show - which films in South Africa rather than the usual location of Majorca - had friends contacting the contestants via video call rather than family members meeting in person. The only contestant to have a video call from an actual relative was Sophie Piper, who was allowed to speak to her sister, Rochelle Humes.

Georgia Steel was granted time to speak to Dani Dyer who she competed alongside on Love Island back in 2018, and Georgia Harrison was permitted to talk with Olivia Attwood who she co-starred with in 2017.

Jess Gale had a video call with influencer Demi Sims, Arabella Chi was granted time for a chat with one of her friends, and Molly Smith broke down in tears when she was allowed to speak to her dog, Nelly. The scenes left viewers confused as the traditional rule of meeting family members was abandoned.

Taking to X, many viewers complained about the format change - and about the choice of contacts the contestants were allowed to chat with. Some were confused in particular with the fact Jess didn’t speak to her sister, Eve, who was on the show earlier this season, with one writing: “why wasn’t her literal twin lol that would of made a lot more sense.”

Confused that Georgia spoke to Dani, one fan asked: “Did Georgia’s family not want to speak to her?” And another asked: "Why is all their calls from "celebs"? Do they not have families? #LoveIsland." Another questioned: "maybe they got disowned by their family idk #LoveIsland."

Another remarked that it was surprising to see the contestants breaking in to tears when they were having pleasant chats with their friends. One wrote: "I’d be crying if I thought I was getting a phone call from my mum and dad and it was actually just an ex islander haha #LoveIsland."

And one viewer was left with an existential crisis, writing: "I wonder if I actually like my friends … why don’t I cry after not seeing them for weeks … what’s wrong with me #loveisland #loveislandallstars."

The interactions may cause chaos as Love Island All Stars nears a climax, however, as various callers told the contestants in the villa that Molly Smith and Callum Jones are essentially the favourites to win - if only they would get back together. The pair met on Love Island in 2020 and dated for three and a half years before breaking up. They were shocked to see each other in the villa for the All Stars spin-off - and have been oblivious to the fact viewers have been praying they will get back together.

One fan saluted the scenes that aired on Thursday, writing: "The producers need to take a f**king bow this year!!! No sign of Callum and Molly getting back together so they get every home call to plant the seed and get the ball rolling… Credit where credit’s due #LoveIsland" alongside a clapping hand emoji.
