Schoolgirl, 10, who died in swimming pool was days away from her birthday

A schoolgirl who died in a tragic accident at a swimming pool was just days away from her 11th birthday.

The 10-year-old has been named locally as Jessica Rennie who got into difficulty in the water at the Northfield Pool in the Kettleshill Crescent area of Aberdeen at around 8pm on Monday night, February 12. She was rushed to hospital but she could not be saved.

Police are currently probing the matter but her death is not being treated as suspicious, it said that "a young female had got into difficulty in a swimming pool in Aberdeen". Her family have said that Jessica was set to turn 11 on February 20.

Local man Yilmaz Huseyin explained how he had created the fundraising page to support the girl's mum with funeral costs, which has already raised £7,665. Yilmaz said: "We have created a GoFundMe for the beautiful Jessica who tragically lost her life on Monday at swimming.

He told the Daily Record: "No family should ever have to be prepared for such a loss. Can the city of Aberdeen and afar please come together and donate as much or little as you can and help the family to give Jessica the best send off we can? You're all in our hearts and thoughts sleep tight Jessica." Jessica's family asked for privacy at this time.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 8pm on Monday, 12 February, 2024, we were made aware a young female had got into difficulty in a swimming pool in Aberdeen. Emergency services attended, and a 10-year-old girl was taken to hospital where she later died.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death, which is not being treated as suspicious." The pool, which is run by Sport Aberdeen, remains closed following the incident. A statement on its website read: "Get active @ Northfield will be closed until further notice."

People have also offered words of support for the family on the GoFundMe fundraising page. One person said: "Thoughts are with Jessica's family."
