Commanders may pay 'crazy' sum to Bears for No. 1 draft pick

The Washington Commanders are gearing up for an important offseason, with big changes underway to rebuild their position in the NFL.

After ending the 2023 season bottom of the NFC East with only four wins - second to the Carolina Panthers', the changes off the field have continued. New owners, led by Josh Harris, have started to put their stamp ono the team with a new general manager and a new head coach, following the departure of Ron Rivera.

A fresh starts at quarterback is also expected for the Commanders, who re believed to be keen on the NFL Draft's top quarterback prospect, Caleb Williams. The USC star is tipped to be the number one pick of the 2024 draft, but Washington's issue is that they pick second. To secure Williams, they'll likely need to climb their way up to the top spot.

According to an NFL.com source, this could mean the Commanders will have to part with a "crazy" sum to persuade the Chicago Bears to give up he right to the first overall selection. If the Bears do decide to opt for former Heisman Trophy winner Williams, it's likely they'd be open to trading Justin Fields to the top bidder in a potentially busy market.

Williams is tipped to be the first overall pick, but the real drama lies in whether it will be Chicago making the selection, or if they'll trade the pick to a quarterback-hungry team. The Bears got this pick in a big trade last season with the Panthers.

The Commanders are hoping their new coaching staff will make them an attractive option for Williams. He worked closely with NEW offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury - the Arizona Cardinals head coach for three years - at USC last season where he was quarterbacks coach and senior offensive analyst.

Williams was delighted with the Commanders decision to hire Kingsbury. "My dawg congrats," Williams posted on his Instagram Stories with an ESPN mock-up picture of Kingsbury, who was heading to the Las Vegas Raiders before pulling out of negotiations, wearing Commanders gear.

Washington was the last team to hire a new head coach for 2024, bringing in Dan Quinn to replace Rivera. After three years as the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator, the former Atlanta Falcons head coach gets his second chance to lead a team. "I am thrilled for the opportunity to become the next head coach of such a storied franchise and fanbase," said Quinn.

"Under the leadership of Josh Harris, the ownership group, and Adam Peters, we cannot wait to help usher in a new era of Washington Commanders football. The organization has an outstanding vision, and I'm honored to be a part of what's next. We have a great task ahead of us, but the ownership group, Adam, and I are lockstep in putting in the work to achieve our goal: consistently competing for Super Bowls year in and year out."

In January, the Commanders welcomed Adam Peters as their new general manager after he left his role at the San Francisco 49ers, where he was assistant general manager from 2021-23.

Choosing a quarterback is going to be the first big job for Washington's new team leaders.
