Mexican striker Diego Chavez has died in a car crash at the age of just 28.

His club FC Juarez said in a statement: "It is with deep sadness that we inform the entire FC Juárez community that our player, Diego “El Puma” Chávez, died early this morning on February 14 in a car accident.

"During his time at FC Juárez, El Puma was characterized by his joy, enthusiasm, simplicity and disposition, as well as his spirit of dedication and love for our colors.

"Our players, staff, coaching staff, board of directors and all of us who make up this institution are heartbroken by this unfortunate news, because more than just a player, today we have to say goodbye to a member of our great family.

"To his loved ones, we want to express our solidarity and love in these difficult times, reiterating that FC Juárez is and will always be an extended home for our beloved Diego.

Many of Juarez's fellow Liga MX sides added their own tributes. Club Necaxa tweeted: "Rest in peace, 'Puma'... On behalf of all of us who are part of the Necaxa Club, we extend our condolences to his family and friends, as well as to all the members of Juarez."

Liga MX added in a statement: "This news hurts us a lot. All our strength with his family and friends. Goodbye, 'Puma'!" Fans have also been left heartbroken by the news, with many taking to social media to share their condolences.

One wrote: "Rest in peace Puma and may light always shine on you!" Another added: "Rest in peace Puma, you always played every game with a lot of energy. Always Bravo!" A third said: "Rest in peace Puma. Thank you for your dedication, your passion, and your love for this team!"

Chavez had come through the ranks at Veracruz, making his Liga MX debut in 2015. He then had a short spell at Necaxa, before joining Spanish lower league side Salamanca ahead of returning to Mexico with Toluca.

The striker then moved to Peru where he featured for Carlos A. Manucci, before joining Juarez in February. Chavez played 16 games this season, scoring once, with Juarez currently sitting bottom of the Mexican top-flight.
