Jonathan Ross admits he left Cher 'upset' thanks to asking about 'rude' rumours
Jonathan Ross has recalled upsetting music icon Cher by asking her about long persisting rumours she has had a rib surgically removed for cosmetic purposes.
The 63-year-old talk-show host co-presents a podcast with his 26-year-old daughter Honey - and in a new episode, he opens up about embarrassing incidents involving celebrities. He steers conversation towards an encounter he had with 77-year-old American legend Cher - explaining how he upset her with a line of questioning.
For decades, rumours have dogged Cher suggesting she once had a rib removed in order to make herself look slimmer. And despite the singer denying the rumours, they have continued regardless. Jonathan, unfortunately, opted to drag up the surgery rumours during a past encounter with the Believe singer.
However, he claimed that he didn’t simply ask her about the rumour out of the blue - he claims she was the one to bring up the topic of strange rumours. Speaking on the Real Talk With Honey & Jonathan Ross podcast, he explained: "She was talking about all these weird rumours about her and I said ‘oh yeah I’ve heard a few’ and she said ‘what ones have you heard’, so she asked me and I said, ‘you had your ribs removed...’ She said ‘that’s ridiculous’ and I said ‘that isn’t the worst part of it, I heard you kept the ribs and made them into salad tongs’, then she looked upset, but I clarified I didn’t believe it, I said no ‘I’m only telling you this cos this is the mad stuff people are saying'."
The rumour that Cher had a rib removed is believed to stem back to a 1988 article in Paris Match magazine which made the accusation. Cher has denied the rumour in the past - blasting the report as “nonsense”. According to New Beauty, Cher slammed the rumour saying she would be unable to perform in skimpy outfits as there would be tell tale scars.
Cher, 76, holds hands with boyfriend Alexander, 36, as they head to dinner in LAThey quote her stating: “If that [rumor] were true how could I do those health club commercials, in which I wear next to nothing? I’d be scarred all over. And how could I wear the kind of clothes I do if I’d had all those many operations? Wouldn’t there be visible scars everywhere? … I’ve been upfront about saying that I had my nose done, my breasts done and had braces on my teeth. The rest is nonsense.”
Cher has opened up about breast surgery that she has had in the past - but warned others about the risk of going under the knife. Opening up to People magazine previously, Cher said: “I’ve had my breasts done, but my breast operations were a nightmare. They were really botched in every way. If anything, they were worse after than before.” Despite the botched procedure, Cher confessed she was ultimately happy with the change she made to her body. She said: “It makes me happy.”
