Gavin & Stacey fans have been left "heartbroken" after co-creator Ruth Jones dismissed the recent speculation that there's "a bidding war" for the show's potential return.

The beloved BBC sitcom originally aired from 2007 to 2010, before returning for a one-off Christmas special in 2019. It ended on a cliffhanger with an unanswered proposal and fans are hoping that the show will return at some point. It was reported earlier this week that there's a "bidding war" between the BBC and Netflix over a potential new episode of Gavin & Stacey. It has also been claimed that a festive special is expected to be filmed over the summer.

It's been reported that co-creators Ruth, 57, and James Corden, 45 - who also star in the acclaimed show - are "almost there" with the script. The writers are said to have approached colleagues about the possibility of reuniting. Ruth - known for her role as Nessa Jenkins on the show - however has said that it's "sadly a rumour" and seemingly dismissed the speculation in an interview. She addressed the situation whilst appearing on RTE Radio 1 earlier.

She said: "Apparently there's a bidding war between the BBC and Netflix." Ruth added: "Where does this stuff come from?" She went on to discuss having met up with James when he returned to the UK after having lived in the US. We went for lunch in London a few months ago and we got papped. And then the next thing is 'oh my god they must be writing more Gavin & Stacey,' which is lovely. It's lovely that people love it and they're so desperate for it," she shared.

The co-creator expressed gratitude over the support from fans, saying: "Imagine if it was the opposite and they were like 'Oh god, they're not bringing that back'." She however continued: "It's sadly a rumour. I don't know what to say." She commented: "All I can say is - if there was something to say on that front, James and I would happily announce it. You know, we would." Ruth added that she is "lost for words" over the speculation and added: "It's hilarious." She further commented in the interview: "I dunno. I just have to smile."
