Schoolgirl, 10, dies in swimming pool horror at UK leisure centre

A 10-year-old schoolgirl has died after an incident at a swimming pool at a leisure centre on the first day of the half term break, police have confirmed.

The youngster was at the Get Active Northfield leisure centre in Aberdeen and was taken by paramedics to the Royal Infirmary in the town but she later died. The youngster is said to have got into difficulty in the water. Police are not treating the death as suspicious. The accident happened on the first day of Aberdeen City Council's three-day mid-term holiday.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Around 8pm on Monday, 12 February, 2024, we were made aware a young female had got into difficulty in a swimming pool in Aberdeen. Emergency services attended, and a 10-year-old girl was taken to hospital where she later died. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death, which is not being treated as suspicious.”

All classes and swimming lessons were cancelled and Get Active remains closed. A spokesman said: “Sport Aberdeen is working closely with the relevant authorities following an incident at Northfield Swimming Pool on the evening of Monday, February 12. Enquiries are ongoing and the venue remains closed until further notice.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: 'We received a call at 19:56 on Monday 12 February to attend an incident at Kettlehills Crescent, Aberdeen. One ambulance and two special operation response teams were dispatched to the scene. One patient was transported to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary."
