Maura Higgins admits she can't believe Love Island made her a household name
Love Island icon Maura Higgins has made an eyebrow raising confession about her time on the ITV show - explaining why she didn’t think she would succeed.
The 33-year-old reality star found fame on the ITV show during season five in 2019 - where she won over viewers with her no nonsense approach to dating. She then went on to build an impressive career including a turn as a Dancing On Ice contestants, and presenting shows including Glow Up on RTE and Love Island USA and Love Island Games.
As well as finding a fan base in the UK and her native Ireland, Maura has been steadily attracting fans in the USA as well. But it seems Maura was not confident that she would have the success she is now enjoying after finding fame on Love Island.
In a new interview, Maura has explained that she thought the British public wouldn’t take to her and she would be voted off Love Island within days. And she also sounds surprised over the success she is building in the USA.

It really changed my life. I genuinely thought when I was going onto the show, because Ireland couldn’t vote, that I’d only last a week.”

Reflecting on her time in the villa, she continued: “I kind of just did it for fun. I don’t think I even thought about it. I just did things in a spur of the moment way. I think I just get bored easily, so I like to try something different and throw myself into it. I never expected anything and maybe that was the best thing to do. There was no career strategy or intention.”
Having been appointed a special host on the American version of Love Island and on the spin-off show Love Island Games, Maura has found a new audience in the USA. But it seems this success has also been a surprise to her.
She said: “Weirdly, I was waiting for a lot of the reaction to be like, ‘We can’t understand her!’ But there was none of that. The Americans love the Irish! They love the accent! So it’s been a good thing.”
Marua recently revealed she is dating a stuntman who is also breaking out into the field of acting. Appearing on The Late Late Show in Ireland, she told host Patrick Kielty that she was enjoying her new romance - having broken up with Strictly Come Dancing star Giovanni Pernice in October 2021.
She told the host last December: “I am no more single. Very happy relationship.” Her boyfriend, Bobby Hanton, recently had a part in the critically panned action film Argylle - which features an all-star cast including Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa. His part in the role led Maura to make a splash at the recent London premiere of the film - where she dazzled on the red carpet.
Meanwhile, her former Love Island ex-boyfriend Chris Taylor recently shone light on the collapse of their relationship - which burned out three years ago. Before featuring on Love Island All Stars, Chris said he would be uncomfortable if Maura walked into the villa. He admitted: "I am not sure how I would deal with my ex being in there as we haven't spoken since we split up."
