A man shocked police by calling 999 to report himself for drink-driving.

North Yorkshire Police said the call came in just before noon on Monday to their control room. They revealed the man told them he was "drink-driving and doesn't know what he is doing".

The driver, who is in his 50s, told the call handler he was in Knaresborough and had had "a heavy weekend". Officers said he was three times over the drink-drive limit when he was located 15 minutes later. He was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and remained in custody, a force spokesperson added.

The force tweeted: "Man calls the police to report that HE is a drink driver! Well it's not every day that this happens...a suspected drink driver dobs themselves in to the police. We caught up with the caller and he was arrested within 15 minutes."

The call handler asked the caller for more details to help track him down. A roadside breath test was then carried out and the driver blew 118 at the side of the road, the legal limit is 35. He was then taken into custody.
