Shocking new footage shows the moment a firecracker explodes in a woman's face - leaving her with a painful eye injury.

The distressing video shows a woman recoiling in horror after the firecracker unexpectedly exploded into her face when she attempted to light it. In the clip from Beijing, she can be seen bending down to light the firecracker ahead of the Lunar New Year celebrations at 5:38pm on 10th February.

But after she brought the lighter close to the red and golden object, the firecracker exploded directly into her eye - causing her to instinctively grasp her face with her hands.

As she stood aside, a couple approached her to offer help while the tearful woman recounted how she had been injured. Chinese media revealed that she had suffered an eye injury and was later treated at the hospital.

The freak injury has attracted plenty of response on Chinese social media - with some leaving their own tips on how to avoid ending up in a similar situation. One user said: "I think the main reason why she was injured was the wrong posture. If it were me, I would definitely take a long stick and move further away before lighting it. This is safer."

A more unusual comment read: "Setting off firecrackers pollutes the air, litters the ground with garbage, and makes babies cry in fear. This is a bad habit against humanity, and retribution has finally come." Adding their own safety advice, another person added: "I have never lit fireworks myself, but whenever I saw others doing it, they always use a lighter to ignite them, while standing aside. Once ignited, they immediately move away!"

According to the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards, anyone wanting to set off fireworks or firecrackers should read all the safety instructions on the box, so that they know important safety details like how far away people need to stand. If you do not understand the instructions and warnings, do not use the fireworks.
