Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is set to receive a hefty pay rise after dramatically leading his team to victory in the Super Bowl.

Not only did he secure his third Super Bowl ring, but he also matched the record of football legend Tom Brady in terms of the number of rings won by that age. Mahomes put on a show in Las Vegas, helping the Chiefs clinch a win against the San Francisco 49ers in overtime to further solidify his billing as an modern-day great.

His throw set Mecole Hardman up for a touchdown, securing KC's 25-22 victory in overtime as the Chiefs won the Vince Lombardi Trophy for a second year in a row. At just 28 years old, this is already Mahomes' third Super Bowl win - with this coming in his fourth outing in the showpiece in five years.

He also bagged the Super Bowl MVP prize for the second year in a row, a feat not achieved since 1980.In addition to these individual and team honours, Mahomes also had reasons to rejoice when it comes to his pay-packed as he is set to earn an extra £988,000 next year.

This comes after his offensive playtime during the regular season exceeded the 50 per cent mark, earning him a base salary increase in 2024. Former agent and CBS Sports reporter Joel Corry previously reported that Chiefs superstar Mahomes will now earn a base salary of £7.79million next season, up from his contracted £6.8m.

This increase was part of the quarterback's contract re-negotiations with the Chiefs last September, guaranteeing him £166m million between 2023 and 2026 campaigns. This amount could rise to £173m by the end of the four-year deal based on the agreement signed last year.

After his latest Super Bowl success, Mahomes is eager for more victories, saying following the game: "I mean, I'm gonna celebrate tonight. I'm gonna celebrate at the parade. And then I'm gonna do whatever I can to be back in this game next year and try to go for that three-Peat.

"So, it's ongoing thing in the NFL, I think Tom [Brady] said it best once you win that championship and you have those parades and you get those rings, you're not the champion anymore."

"You have to come back with that same mentality, and I learned from guys like that, that have been the greatest of all time at the top of the level and so that's my mindset. I'm gonna celebrate with my guys because of how we've done this but then we're gonna work our way to get back to this game next year."

Now matching Brady in Super Bowl victories by the age of 28, he seems keen to chase the NFL legend's record. After the New England Patriots legend's third win in 2005, he had to wait ten years before tasting victory again in 2015, followed by wins in 2017, 2019 and 2021.
