The vile sex offender thought to have snatched Madeleine McCann was spotted laughing "without a care in the world" just weeks after being grilled by cops.

Christian Brueckner reportedly partied with pals for his birthday bash around a month after cops questioned him over the disappearance of the missing British youngster. The brazen photos show him enjoying a steak dinner, vol-au-vents and a Spanish omelette during the party for his 37th birthday in 2013.

The 47-year-old, who is currently serving a seven-year jail term for rape in Germany, is set to stand trial on five separate sexual assaults charges on Friday. He is due to face trial later this year for offences unrelated to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in May 2007.

Speaking to the Sun on Sunday, a former friend said: "“He was the life and soul of the party. He would get everyone drunk with free booze and we would end up partying until two or 3am. His birthday was the same. It ended up being a really long night.”

In one disturbing image, the rapist is seen hugging his pet dog. The hound is thought to be the same animal that police found dead three years later. Its body was buried next to six memory sticks containing videos of child abuse.

Little Madeleine was days away from turning four when she vanished from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal in 2007.

Brueckner's first public court appearance since being named the prime suspect is set to take place on Friday. Media outlets from across the world will be swarming the Braunschweig Regional Court, with local cops drafting in armed police units among enhanced security measures. The trial is expected to last until June.

The gun-wielding cops will stand guard inside and outside the court for each of the 29 hearings. Brueckner is expected to be moved from his high-security prison in northern Germany for the duration of the trial. He will enter courtroom 141 via a secure tunnel from a holding facility accompanied by his legal team.

Lawyers, media and members of the public will have to show formal identification to police before entering the court. Court spokeswoman Lisa Rust confirmed a ‘polizeianordnung’ - police order - had been issued for Brueckner’s trial.

“These heightened security measures have now been compiled,” she told the Mirror. “The polizeianordnung is like an official directive issued by the law enforcement authorities - here the police. It governs certain actions or behaviour in accordance with the law and public safety.”

Photographers and TV crews will be allowed into the hearing - giving the public their first glimpse of Brueckner. Officers from Germany’s crack Special Deployment Commando (SEK) are expected to be in court.

Police will also guard witnesses in the trial, who are being flown from across Europe for the hearings. A German source said: “This trial is a big deal for the authorities. The eyes of the world will be on Braunschweig and they are determined nothing goes wrong.

“Because of the Madeleine McCann connection, the trial is probably bigger in the UK and Portugal than it is in Germany. Security will be extremely tight - the judge and the police will not be taking any chances.

“Given the high-profile nature of the case, there is a very high likelihood of increased armed police presence, both inside and outside court.”
