A mum found dead next to a bloody iron in a hotel room was acting "nervous" just days before she died, according to her heartbroken son.

Denisse Oleas-Arancibia, 38, was discovered in her £90-per-night room by a maid at the Soho54 Hotel in New York at around 10.30am on Thursday.

Police were called to her room where they found her unconscious and unresponsive with trauma to the face. She was tragically pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. No one has been arrested but authorities believe her death was a homicide.

Her devastated 18-year-old son Edwin Cevallos has revealed the last time he spoke to his mum was the day before she was found unconscious. He believes there was something different about her in the week before her death.

"In the week [before] she was like, sad. She was so nervous and she was worried,'" Cevallos told the New York Daily News in Spanish. However, he's uncertain if it had anything to do with her death.

"I am in shock. I can't believe this happened. This is surprising," Cevallos added. "Everything here in New York reminds me of her. Everything.'"

The mum had been living with her son and her young nephew in a flat in Queens, neighbours said. "My mom, she worked very hard,' Cevallos added. "She was working all day. She was always working for us to give us the best life in this country."

The 18-year-old said he waited for his mum to come down on Thursday morning but, when she failed to, he called the police at around 1pm. Cops came to his home and disclosed the tragic news of her death.

Denisse had moved to America five years ago from her native Ecuador and had been living in New York for the last couple of years to be close to her son.

"She wanted a better life because in Ecuador is a lot of bad people. It was so dangerous,' Edwin said. "She gave us the life that we always wanted.'

The mum had made her son breakfast on Wednesday morning and had paid a hairdresser for him to get his haircut. She told him: "Goodbye, I love you," as he left for school that day and gave him the sign of the cross.

Edwin added: "I want (people to know) that she was always helping people. She was a very good person. She never hurt anybody. She was always paying for everything. She never owed money to anybody. She was always looking to help them move forward."

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death but authorities are proceeding as if her death is a homicide. The mum suffered a cut to the head that detectives believe could be from blunt force trauma.

No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing, according to police.
