A woman was seriously injured after being mauled by an American bulldog outside a supermarket this weekend.

Police were called to Tesco in Castle Street, Salisbury, at around 1.30pm on Saturday.

Officers confirmed the woman is in hospitals with injuries said to be serious but not life threatening.

The dog’s owner was arrested.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: “We are appealing for witnesses following an incident outside Tesco supermarket in Castle Street, Salisbury at about 1.30pm yesterday (14/01) during which a woman was attacked by a dog.

“The woman was taken to hospital where she received treatment for injuries which are serious but not life threatening.

“The male owner of the white American bulldog was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He is currently in police custody.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call us on 101 quoting log 54230004637.”

Officers confirmed the dog was taken into care.

Last week a young woman was mauled to death and another was rushed to hospital after a horror afternoon dog attack as armed police seized eight dogs at the scene.

Surrey Police dispatched armed officers and the National Police Air Service (NPAS) to the scene after receiving reports of a dog attacking people at 2.45pm.

A 28-year-old woman from London was tragically declared dead at the scene and another woman was rushed to hospital with dog bites. A police spokesperson said she has since been discharged.

Police confirmed eight dogs were seized and taken to police custody.

Meanwhile in the US a schoolboy lost most of his scalp after he was torn from his bicycle by three loose pit bulls.

Justin Gilstrap was cycling through his US neighbourhood when the ferocious dogs attacked his leg and head.

The 11-year-old had half of his ear missing by the time police arrived.

His cousin Mason Aguilar called 911 when the dogs pounced on Friday and dragged the boy into a ditch on the side of the road.

"All I hear is screaming ‘help, help, help,’" Mason told .

"I thought my cousin was at his house playing a game, then I see him sitting there in the ditch with three dogs and blood everywhere saying 'Mason help'."

Dog owner Burt Baker reportedly told police his dogs enjoy chasing people on bicycles.

He was arrested shortly after and charged with reckless conduct in Columbia, South Carolina.
