Teacher has part of her skull removed after 'savage attack from teen student'

A high school teacher in Ohio had to have a portion of her skull removed after she was brutally attacked by a teen boy who was possibly under the influence of drugs.

The teacher - an unnamed educator working at Colerain High School at the time of the Jan. 4 incident - had to have her skull cap removed to "prevent brain damage due to swelling," Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers told local outlets.

On the day of the assault, school resource police officers responded to the scene at around 2:18PM after receiving reports of the teacher being assaulted, according to a release from the Colerain, Ohio Police Department.

In addition to the police, personnel with the Colerain Township Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services were also dispatched to the school. They took the teacher to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where she underwent surgery for the serious injuries.

The 16-year-old student - whose name is being withheld - was arrested and charged with one count of felonius assault. He will also be disciplined by the school district, according to the release from the police.

The teen was also taken to the hospital and treated before being released into police custody. He was then taken to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center. His attorney shared that they are currently awaiting results from medical exams to determine if the student had any drugs in his system.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers confirmed that the student is accused of repeatedly punching the teacher in the head, according to ABC affiliate WCPO.

Describing the entire ordeal as an isolated incident, the Northwest Local School District asserted that it "remains resolute" in its commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all students and staff.

Police body cam footage obtained by Law & Crime shows the moment officers spoke with the teen suspect, following the aftermath of the alleged attack.

The teen can be seen nearly collapsing as officers lead him out of the school. This prompts officers to bring him into a nearby room and sit the boy in a chair.

“Did you take anything, smoke anything, drink anything,” one officer asks the teen. He responds: “I took a cart, I didn’t take no weed."

According to WCPO, a "cart" refers to some type of vape device. This prompts officers to ask: "Did someone give you something in the bathroom?”

When the teen confirms that this is the case, officers quickly follow up asking for clarity as to what he was given.

A school employee notices that the boy may be hurt, something confirmed by officers who note that it appears the teen may have hit his head.

“I think he was banging his head, I think against the glass,” another school staff person adds.

Eventually, the student informs police that he was in a "dream-like state" but remembers attacking the teacher.

“His behavior, his violent behavior, his erratic behavior, the attack, the assault was not the result of him trying to attack the teacher, it was the result of the impact an influence that the drugs had on him it made him that way,” the suspect’s attorney, Clyde Bennet, told WCPO. “He didn’t believe he was ingesting drugs he was just consuming a vape like a lot of juveniles and teenagers do.”
